Honors English 1 (9th grade)

Jocelyn Corley - Office Hours M-F 11a-1p

Jocelyn Corley <jocelyn.corley@usd470.com>

The continuous learning plan for the last six weeks of school in Honors English 1 is dependent upon the reading and understanding of Fahrenheit 451. Books were checked out to students before we left for spring break, so they all have a copy of the book. I have designed post-reading tasks to be completed on a weekly basis that corresponds with each of the three sections of the book. Tasks are designed to correspond with the reading and should take students no longer than 30 minutes of work daily (aside from the reading). They are also designed to be asynchronous meaning that students can work at their own pace and through the tasks in whatever order they choose.

Google Classroom

Tasks are to be completed on a weekly basis and expected to be completed by Sunday of each week. All work for the course should be completed by the final day of the semester, May 14.

The timeline for task completion is on a weekly basis. I have planned each week's worth of tasks to support each section of the book. Students are able to work through each week of tasks at their own pace throughout the week and in whatever order they choose.

For the remaining weeks of the school year, in lieu of studying what was originally planned, we will be examining some essential questions about time sensitive issues by reading and studying through a literary lens a series of poems, short stories, informational texts, and more that explore unique individuals facing similar trials and tribulations. And by the time the school year closes, we will have a better picture of who we want to be as an individual when we get to the other side of this pandemic.

Assignments posted on Google Classroom

Assignments are designed to completed on a weekly basis, so work is due by Sunday of each week.

Jocelyn Corley <jocelyn.corley@usd470.com>

In AP Language, we will continue to move forward with test prep for the AP exam coming up sometime in the upcoming weeks. The College Board hosts weekly webinars as test prep, so students will be responsible for watching those to prepare for the test. We are limited on details about the AP exam, so when more information becomes available (Friday, April 3), the continuous learning plan could change slightly and be more focused on what information they provide. In the meantime, students should expect 2-3 tasks to complete on a weekly basis that includes writing, note-taking, etc. Tasks should take no longer than 45 minutes to an hour to complete (at the most).

Timeline for completion of tasks should take no longer than 45 minutes to an hour per task. Students can work at their own pace and work through the tasks in whatever order they choose. Again, tasks should be completed on a weekly basis.

Tasks are designed to be completed on a weekly basis, so students should work to complete them by Sunday of each week.

Students’ final mission as a senior in English class is to read a British or World Literature novel of your choosing, selected from the list available here: https://bit.ly/2UXDMkG. As students read, they must complete a MINIMUM of 60 dialectical journal entries or up to a MAXIMUM of 100 dialectical journal entries. Students may also want to annotate the text using sticky notes and flags (either virtually or physically) to respond as they go, then go back to those areas when creating the dialectical journals. Once the novel is complete, they will wrap things up with a final timed writing or project.
