Biochemical Pathway

INTRODUCTORY LEVEL
Computer ApplicationsDuration: 1 creditPrerequisite: noneIn Computer Applications courses, students acquire knowledge of and experience in the proper and efficient use of previously written software packages. These courses explore a wide range of applications, including (but not limited to) word-processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and database programs, and they may also cover the use of electronic mail and desktop publishing.

Environmental ScienceDuration: 1.0 creditPrerequisites: Introduction to Physical Science (or equivalent)Offered every other year (20/21 and 22/23)Environmental Science provides students with the foundation of scientific principles, concepts, and skills required to understand the interrelationships between humans and the natural world. Students will identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.CN 13000f                                           CN 13001s
Chemistry Duration: 1.0 creditPrerequisites: 10th gradeChemistry course involve studying the composition, properties, and reactions of substances.  This course explores concepts related to the solids, liquids, and gases, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction reactions, and atomic structure.  Chemical formulas, equations, and nuclear reactions are also studied.CN1354f                                               CN1355s
TECHNICAL LEVELAnatomy and Physiology Duration: 1.0 creditPrerequisites: Environmental Science or Biology (or concurrently with teacher approval)Anatomy and Physiology is a yearlong science course that uses project-based learning to integrate anatomical terminology, cells, tissues, and organ systems of the body with human body functions of communication, power, movement, immunity, and homeostasis.  Activities include laboratory investigations, dissection, disease symptoms and diagnosis, biomedical and health science career exploration, and CPR (Basic Life Support) certification.CN13299f                                            CN13000s PharmacologyDuration:  .5 credit                                                                                                      Prerequisites:  Grade 11Online Course through Barton Community College This course introduces the study of the properties, effects, and therapeutic value of the primary agents in the major drug categories. Topics include nutritional products, blood modifiers, hormones, diuretics, cardiovascular agents, respiratory drugs, and gastrointestinal agents. Upon completion, students should be able to place major drugs into correct therapeutic categories and identify indications, side effects, and trade and generic names.CN1374f                                      CN1375s
APPLICATION LEVEL
BioChem Work Experience Duration: 0.5 creditPrerequisite: Environmental Science or ChemistryApplication level workplace experience /internship that allows students to observe and develop the skills and knowledge necessary for a career in a biochemical field. Students travel to a job site to gain professional experience in a biochemical occupation.CN1337s
