Open Textbook Fellowship
About the Open Textbook Fellowship (OTF)
The Open Textbook Fellowship (OTF) was established by Academic Affairs and the CTL to address a number of critical issues involving college textbooks:
the rapidly increasing cost of textbooks (135% increase over the past two decades)
students not purchasing textbooks which negatively impacts their academics and mental health
To that end, the objectives of the OTF are:
To create a sustainable initiative to facilitate the adoption of open textbooks/courseware—often referred to as Open Educational Resources (OER).
To positively impact student learning and college affordability without sacrificing the quality and rigor of existing materials.
The 2024 fellowship was held May 20 - May 24, 2024.
Impact
In five years (2019-2023), the OTF has:
trained over 50 instructors in five cohorts
involved over 60 courses and 210 sections
including over 20 non-cohort courses where OTF faculty were inspired to adopt OER for other courses
impacted 9,700 students
conservatively saved those students over $615,000 in textbook costs
Participating in the OTF
The OTF is offered each summer, immediately after the conclusion of the spring term. The call for participants is issued in early April.
