According to Dictionary.com a citation is "the act of citing or quoting a reference to an authority or a precedent" (Dictionary.com). Citations are used to show which sources were used throughout a project or assignment where the researcher referenced or utilized sources which were not authored or created by them. The use of citations in a piece of work gives it a higher authority or validity in the scholarly community.
Example Citation
"Code of Academic Honesty." The University of Iowa: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, The University of Iowa, 2019, clas.uiowa.edu/students/handbook/academic-fraud-honor-code. Accessed 11 Feb. 2019.
A collection of one or more sources used throughout a research project or assignment indicated all sources which were utilized and not authored by the researcher. Sources are arranged in alphabetical by the surname of the author or the first word(s) listed in the citation. When two sources begin using the same word, a second word is used for both the Works Cited and the In-text Citation. NoodleTools will assist students in organizing the citations in the proper order and format them to meet the standard guidelines of the citation style.
MLA Works Cited pages should be double spaced and include a hanging indent to all but the first line of each citation.

"An in-text citation is a reference made within the body of text of an academic essay. The in-text citation alerts the reader to a source that has informed your own writing" (Cite This For Me). MLA In-text citations for print books will include a page number.
Many writers choose to add in-text citations in the final draft and use various organization strategies, like numbering, lettering, or color coding, to identify the sources used throughout a project. Once the project is in its final draft, writers will return to their organization method and input the properly formatted in-text citations.
