Dr. Elddie M. Román-Morales obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Applied Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez Campus (UPRM), specializing in Biophysics. She studied the interaction of H2S with hemeproteins. She also acquired her bachelor’s and master’s degree in chemistry from UPRM. She has been an Assistant Professor of the Natural Sciences Department in the University of Puerto Rico at Aguadilla since 2019. Currently, she is (1) a mentor professor of the “Strengthening Teaching and Advancing Research Partnerships: Reinforcing the STEM Workforce (STARp)”; (2) Co-Director of the “Supporting Opportunities for Learning, Awareness, Research, and Inclusion in STEM and Citizen Science (SOLARIS)” grant from the MSEIP Program; (3) Co-Director of the “Creating Opportunities through Networking, Education, Community-building, and Training (CONNECT)” grant from the MSEIP Program; (4) Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) of the “Enhancing Experimental Learning by Assessing Food Quality of Tropical Crops Using Advanced Chemical Sensors and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles” subaward of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) from the USDA; (5) Liaison Officer of the Title V: “Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions Program (DHSI)” grant focused on Green Science Community Building; (6) Member of the Student Recruitment Committee, Academic & Co-Curricular Activities Committee, Natural Science Undergraduate Research Symposium Committee, and PRISM/Junior Technical Meeting 2024 Special Committee; (7) Coordinator of the Organic Chemistry Laboratory course; (8) Co-Advisor of the Scientista Association, Aguadilla Chapter.

Research: Chemical & Biological Remediation of Tropical Crops Diseases and Pollutant Detection Research. One of the research group project proposal focuses on taking advantage and enhancing the ligninolytic activity of enzymes, such as laccase and peroxidases, to increase the degradation process of DDT. The individual and synergetic effect of horseradish peroxidase and laccase will be evaluated during the degradation process of DDT by following the maximum absorption band of DDT in Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-VIS), when the DDT is exposed to the ligninolytic activity this enzymes.
