The STARp project will increase the number of participating students pursuing careers in STEM fields. The project has the following core areas. By assessing the effectiveness of the teaching, the effectiveness of research, and partnership strategies, the project will contribute to the knowledge base of successful intervention strategies to support student development and entrance into the STEM workforce.

Reduce failure and improve learning in STEM gatekeeper courses.
Award 24-40 scholarships to academically talented, financially needed students from the Department of Natural Sciences.
Graduate at least 90% of the STARp Scholars.
Build partnerships to provide more learning and internship opportunities for students and to improve training and meet the industry needs.
Improve the STEM student pipeline from high schools to college through a citizen science project.

Dr. Yadira Malavez-Acevedo authored the proposal and received the grant for the "Strengthening Teaching and Advancing Research Partnerships: Reinforcing the STEM Workforce (STARp). Proposal for NSF19-540 Improving Undergraduate STEM Education:Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI Program)". She also directed the project from 2022 to 2023.
