Class observation occured from the first week until the second week of total 5 days. I observed the general biology classes of 11th grade STEM A, STEM B, STEM C, and STEM D taught by Mr. Nonilo Cuevo and Sayla Dhiyaul Auliya, one of the participant from Universitas Bengkulu who came earlier than us from UPI.
Teaching Methods
The learning method used by Mr. Cuevo tends to be teacher-centered, but he always involves his students in discussions. Mr. Cuevo always only uses a whiteboard, and if he uses a presentation, the presentation slides shown are only pictures and explanations regarding the pictures he will develop by writing on the whiteboard, either in the form of points or organizational charts which make it easier for students to compare and connect between concepts discussed.Â
Learning Materials and Innovation
Learning is delivered with verbal explanations accompanied by explanations on the whiteboard and presentations projected using an LED projector or LED TV that can be connected to the presentation. For lessons those require practical work can be carried out in a science laboratory with adequate practical equipment, including a microscope and teaching aids. Students have textbooks and take notes or do their assignments on yellow lined folio paper.
Sources of Learning and Technology Used
Learning resources are obtained from textbooks or accurate online sources. The school provides wifi facilities for each student which requires them to log in to their school account. Textbooks are also available in e-books version on the CENCAGE website, and are supported by subscription facilities to Grammarly and scientific journals.
For online learning, the school uses a learning management system called Canvas and Microsoft Teams which facilitates students to attend online classes and submit assignments online. Teachers can also upload learning materials so that they can be accessed by students.
Authentic Assessment Used
For formative assessment, Mr. Cuevo usually asks students to answer questions asked in the lesson to focus their attention. Students have quiz points that will increase if they can answer the questions asked. For summative assessments, students will complete assignments in the form of questions or experimental reports on yellow folio paper or submit them online. The exam is carried out using a one-by-one oral exam method and a long test in the form of multiple choice questions with a time limit.
