Amado Alvarez

Museum Administrator, Yuchengco Museum and Head, National Committee on Museums, Subcommission for Cultural Heritage, National Commission for Culture and the Arts

Amado Alvarez started his involvement with museum work as a volunteer at the PANAMIN Museum at Nayong Pilipino way back in the mid-70’s when he was still a college student at UP.

Right after college, he was hired on a per project basis by the UP Institute of Planning after which he joined the newly-created Design Center Philippines as cultural researcher, where he was tasked to initiate research on Philippine indigenous arts and crafts.

In 1976, he was assigned to the newly established Metropolitan Museum of Manila (Met) which was envisioned to showcase international visiting art exhibitions. He was at the Met until 1986 as Assistant Director.

In 1987, he spearheaded the establishment of the Philippine Association of Museums Inc. (PAMI) of which he was the founding president. During also this year, he was exhibit designer for the inaugural exhibition of the UP Vargas Museum in 1987.

From 1988 to 1999, he challenged himself in his professional career when he joined an Advertising and PR outfit. This professional diversion made him cultivate promotion, marketing, PR as well as business planning skills. Beginning 1994 until present, he has handled the implementation of Philippine Art Awards, a national visual art competition.

He was invited to rejoin the Philippine museum scene in 2000 as Business & Operations Manager of the Ayala Museum until 2005. Currently, he is Museum Administrator of the Yuchengco Museum

He is also a member of the BenCab Art Foundation and the Alliance of Greater Manila Area Museums, Inc.(AGMAM). He is currently serving a second term as head of the Committee on Museums or NCOM under the Sub-Commission on Cultural Heritage of NCCA.

Has been a member of the curatorial team involved in various museums such as the Museo Iloilo, UP Museo Kordilyera, Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Museum and the Museo San Pablo.
