Being Coachable
For Students
Tips for (email) communication
Use the provided email templates for establishing the initial contact with your coach or an expert you would like to consult.
Carbon-copy your teacher and all your teammates in all email communication. There might be a time when you cannot respond promptly to a reply ... your teammates can take over.
After establishing contact via email, provide multiple options for times to meet. Your meeting will likely happen outside of class time.
Explain clearly where you want to meet. Online - Create a google meet. Offline - make sure your teacher helps with access to campus.
Be responsive. React promptly to email.
Consider the tone of your communication. Be appreciative of the help someone might be able to offer you. Be careful to not sound demanding or entitled.
Take time to write emails well. Even when you are in a hurry to reply promptly.
Tips for meetings
Plan at least 30 minutes for a meeting - Don't rush someone you are trying to get help from.
Make a short list of questions/topics
Ask not only to get answers but also to find new sources of information.
Be open-minded, but prepared.
Take off your mask (especially if you are meeting in an online video call)
Smile and make eye contact.
Close your laptop as much as is possible.
Take notes. Preferably on paper.
Write a thank you note after the meeting.
