Criterion B - Developing Ideas
Bi - Design Specification
Develop a design specification which clearly states the success criteria for the design of a solution
Assessment
1-2 The team lists some basic design specifications for the design of a solution.
3-4 The team lists some design specifications, which relate to the success criteria for the design of a solution.
5-6 The team develops design specifications, which outline the success criteria for the design of a solution.
7-8 The team develops detailed design specifications, which explain the success criteria for the design of a solution based on the analysis of the research.
The success criteria in your design specification are already written for you! They are directly derived from the judging criteria. Success in front of the judges means success in your project.
As a team
Outline why each of the success criteria provided is important for a successful social enterprise. Do this work together. All of you need to have an understanding of all judging criteria as they often relate to each other.
As an individual
List initial ideas you have to fulfil the requirements of the judging criteria that relate to your role in the team. Be thoughtful, not superficial. Use your newly acquired knowledge from your research in the 'inquiring and analyzing' stage
Bii - Design Ideas
Develop a range of feasible design ideas which can be correctly interpreted by others
Assessment
1-2 The team presents one design, which can be interpreted by others.
3-4 The team presents a few feasible designs, using an appropriate medium(s) or annotation, which can be interpreted by others.
5-6 The team develops a range of feasible design ideas, using an appropriate medium(s) and annotation, which can be interpreted by others.
7-8 The team develops a range of feasible design ideas, using an appropriate medium(s) and detailed annotation, which can be correctly interpreted by others.
As an individual
Develop a morphological ideation matrix with 5 ideas for each of the features of your team's social enterprise that you are responsible for through your role. You can change the suggested features below as you deem fit.
Technical features
Product - What are the options/variations of a product we could make?
Materials - What combinations of materials could we use?
Production methods - What tools for production could we use?
Stage prop - What could we take on stage to share with the judges? Sample product, model, ...?
Waste mitigation and sustainability - How can we prevent waste and make our operation environmentally sustainable?
Marketing features
Point of sales - Where can we sell our product or service?
Target audiences (beneficiaries) - Who could we sell our product or service to?
Promotion / Publicity - How will people know about our product?
Branding - Logo - What could a logo look like? Wordmark, symbol, mascot, emblem.
Branding - Slogan - What are possible tag lines or slogans that could work for our organization?
Strategic features
Revenue model - What revenue models might work?
Scale of production - What could be our initial scale of production? On-demand, batch size, scaling.
Pricing - What could be the price points for our product/service? Sell individual items or in bulk?
Initial investment use - How will we use the prize money of Phoenix Nest?
Future growth - diversification, scaling?
Innovation features
Curriculum connections - What links are there to things already happening in classrooms at UNIS?
Community connections - What existing partnerships, extra-curricular activities or UNIS events are there that could be leveraged?
Location of impact - Where could your team's beneficiaries be?
Moment of delivery - What would be a time in the year your beneficiaries could be impacted (visit, items sent)?
Endorsement - Who could endorse your social enterprise?
As a team
Discuss each matrix produced by your team members verbally. On each matrix:
Identify combinations of features that you feel would work well together. You can do so by marking them with the same colour.
List notes of the feedback of the team on your ideas. Things you need to remember. Maybe an additional idea came up?
Tip!
Create a draft matrix first - and a neat version after that. You need to be able to share your ideas in your group and with your coach. It has to be readable/ understandable/ interpretable. Any box in the morphological idea generation matrix can have a maximum of five words. Each box must contain a doodle. Communicate your ideas visually.
Biii - Chosen Design
Present the final chosen design and justify its selection
Assessment
1-2 The team explains the selection of a design with reference to the design specification.
3-4 The team justifies the selection of the chosen design with reference to the design specification.
5-6 The team presents the chosen design and justifies its selection with reference to the design specification.
7-8 The team presents the chosen design and justifies fully and critically its selection with a detailed reference to the design specification.
As an individual
Summarize your current thinking for the details of your social enterprise from the perspective of your role in the form of a 'visual' mindmap.
State the success of each aspect (success criterion) of your role by rating it on a scale of 1-4 stars.
List areas the might require further exploration or research.
Biv - Planning Drawings/Diagrams
Develop accurate and detailed planning drawings/diagrams and outline the requirements for the creation of the chosen solution.
Assessment
1-2 The team creates incomplete planning drawings/diagrams.
3-4 The team creates planning drawings/diagrams or lists requirements for the creation of the chosen solution.
5-6 The team develops accurate planning drawings/diagrams and lists requirements for the creation of the chosen solution.
7-8 The team develops accurate and detailed planning drawings/diagrams and outlines requirements for the creation of the chosen solution.
Part 1: Message - Medium - Method
As an individual
It is time to start preparing how your team will present your social enterprise to the judges. This will need to be done in a way that convinces the jury of how feasible and impactful your enterprise is. And of course, you should convey your enthusiasm and drive to make a difference!
Message - Outline the key points you want to convey to the judges from the perspective of your role in the team. What do you want the judges to know?
Medium - Outline how you will share each key point - verbal message, props, visual aids, photos, slide content etc.
Timing - Estimate how much time you will need (in seconds!) to communicate each key point to the judges. You have a total of 4 minutes (240 seconds) to deliver your pitch.
Key points to convey for technical lead
How does the product work? How is it used?
How many of the product are you going to make in the first year (scope)?
What resources do you need to create these products
What similar products do already exist? What did you learn from them?
What safety considerations for your product did you consider? Will you get permission to sell what and where you want to sell?
Key points to convey for marketing lead
How will you hook (catch the attention, stand out, be remembered) the judges and the audience?
Who are your target audiences (benefactors and beneficiaries) exactly?
How will you brand your product? How will people recognize it?
How will people know about your enterprise (exposure)?
Key points to convey for strategic lead
How will you use the prize money (investment)?
What will your operational costs be?
Where will your income come from?
What are your plans for growth beyond the first year?
Key points to convey for innovation lead
What makes your enterprise unique? What is your Unique Selling Point (USP)?
Why is your enterprise better than all the others proposed in this year's Phoenix Nest? Why should you win the competition?
What are your dreams for the distant future? How do you see enterprise 10 years from now?
Part 2: Inventory of pitch resources
The goal of making an inventory of your message, medium and method is to create an inventory of what you will need to prepare for your pitch. In other words: What materials, slides, photos, branding elements etc. etc. will you need?
As a team
Read through what you compiled in part 1 of this step. Make sure all team members have understood all of it. Together:
What - State all 'things' you will need to create in order to prepare for your pitch.
How/When/Where - Outline how/when/where you will use these resources.
Who - Identify who will be responsible for the creation of these resources.
