The Board of the IAU constitutes its Governing Body, made up of delegates elected for a period of four years.
This body is made up of nine delegates, including a President and two Vice-Presidents, elected by the General Assembly. The Board is assisted in its work by the General Secretariat, i.e. the General Secretary and the Deputy General Secretary. The Honorary Presidents of the UAI are invited to Bureau meetings in an advisory capacity.
The Board meets at least once a year. It traditionally meets in Paris in the first half of each year, at the invitation of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. A second meeting is usually held in the second half of the year at the invitation of another UAI member Academy.
The Bureau is responsible for preparing the General Assembly. It controls the general administration and monitors the progress of scientific work. It is empowered to take any urgent measures that may be required between General Assemblies.
