Survey teams from across the country are tested on their equipment knowledge, presentation skills, survey modeling, and teamwork. For the Carolinas Symposium, the UNC Charlotte's ASCE surveying team finished 3rd place overall in competition at the UNCC in 2025. The surveying competition provides members with exposure to an in-demand alternate career path, marketable Civil3D/AutoCAD experience, familiarity with surveying equipment used on job sites, and great memories.
"The surveying team was kind of an odd choice for me since I'm mostly focused on structures, but it ended up being a great way for me to get involved with ASCE without too much pressure in the beginning. The extra knowledge I got from working with the surveying team makes me feel like I have a niche specialty that few other students can claim. The mapping project helped me get into my first internship by bringing a copy with me to show during the interview. Being captain has really helped my leadership and communication skills, and the rivalry with the others schools at symposium drives me to try and improve our team every year. I want to be able to send out the next group of students with the skills and resources to not only do well in future ASCE competitions but also in whatever career path they choose to apply themselves to."
-- Carson Bettinger, UNCC Survey Team Captain 2023-2026
"While the connections I make with people are very essential in my professional trek in engineering, the surveying competition provided me with a good chunk of the knowledge and/or context needed when entering my Land Development internship in the Summer of 2022 … in addition with great memories with my peers of course. You could not have asked for a better opportunity!"
