F.1.9 Impact Attenuator
A deformable, energy absorbing device located forward of the Front Bulkhead.
Explanation
The Impact Attenuator is basically a big piece of foam (or something fancier and lighter than foam if you are trying to shave weight wherever you can). It's purpose is to crunch on impact to slow down the rate of deceleration, thus reducing the force the car experiences (F=ma , if a is smaller, F is smaller). The Impact Attenuator will probably be a trapizoaidal shaped piece of foam, with some type of cover to protect the foam from getting scratched up. It is important that the cover is also made of something that will crumple, because if the cover is too stiff, it will defeat the purpose of the foam.
The Impact Attenuator is mounted on the Anti Intrusion Plate, which will be connected to the Front Bulkhead.
