“Working Conditions of Minnesota Direct Line Social Workers: Neoliberal Managerialism, Professional Discretion, and Resistance”
Date: November 3, 2021 11:30am-12:30pm (CST)
Presentation Description: The practice of social work has changed significantly since the introduction of neoliberal social policy design and administration models in the 1980s. Publicly-funded social welfare organizations were required to adopt a marketized service delivery model. This included pressures to reduce costs, increase efficiency, compete for purchase of service contracts, and apply business management principles to direct line workers. This research project surveyed all Minnesota direct line licensed social workers to understand how neoliberal managerialism has affected their working conditions and ability to use professional discretion in practice. It also questioned how social workers might be resisting neoliberal managerialism

Hello, Everyone.
Some of you entered our PhD program with lengthy histories of independent teaching experience through other institutions (e.g., you are/were adjunct faculty at other institutions, you were faculty, etc). As such, this message may not apply to you (but keep reading, just in case it does).
Some of you entered our PhD program with limited or no teaching experience. While in the PhD program, I know that many of you eventually want to be adjunct instructors in our MSW program (or at another institution in the area) and you need ways to gain some teaching experience before that happens.
For those who are interested, we have teaching mentorships with full-time faculty who teach MSW and/or undergraduate courses. The teaching mentorship is one step in preparing our PhD students to teach a course on their own.
Attached are the guidelines for the teaching mentorship. I recommend everyone utilize this opportunity at least once during their time in our program (and as often as you want), as a way to build your teaching experience. I also recommend that you do not pursue this option until you have completed GRAD 8101 "Teaching in Higher Education".
Faculty teaching assignments for the 2022-2023 academic year have not yet been completed. Once faculty know what courses they have been assigned to teach, I will ask faculty to indicate if they are willing to serve as a teaching mentor and to let me know what course(s) this would be for. When I have that information, I will share it with all of you. From there, you may contact individual faculty to further discuss the teaching mentorship.
Please let me know if you have any questions about this opportunity or the process.
Best,
Lynette

Hello, Everyone
Our next professional development seminar is March 16th from 12-1pm. Please use this link to access the seminar: https://umn.zoom.us/j/97356698784
Our topic for this seminar is publishing. My plan is to overview different types of manuscripts, how to find journal options, how to organize a manuscript submission, etc. If there is time, we can discuss journal impact factors and types of journals.
If you have specific questions about publishing, feel free to send them to me ahead of time and I'll do my best to address them in the content I prepare. As always, though, you may ask any questions during our seminar. Anything we don't get to in March can be included in a future seminar.
Best,
Lynette
