CMDA

Christian Medical & Dental Association

What is CMDA?

A Little Background ....

The Christian Medical & Dental Association (CMDA) is a non-denominational organization for healthcare professionals & students. CMDA is both a national and local organization, with regional, state, and local chapters. Our local chapter here at UMN-Twin Cities welcomes medical, dental, and other health-professional students to participate in our events.

Within CMDA, we encourage students to thrive in their Christian faith through intentional times of study and fellowship during school. We hold Bible studies, prayer meetings, guest lunch lectures, roundtable discussions, meetings with local healthcare professionals, and fun social events. We also help facilitate student involvement in national conferences and retreats, and connect students with resources provided by National CMDA.

If you want to be involved in our CMDA chapter or receive notifications of our upcoming events, please send an email to one of our officers or to cmda@umn.edu. If you are interested in National CMDA membership, please visit the national CMDA website at cmda.org for more information.

February 10th, 11:30am CST

“Engaging the Beginning of Human Life”

with Dr. Darrell Bock, Jeff Barrows, DO, MA (Ethics), and Mary Beth Jewell, MD

Christians in healthcare are often in the perfect position to help women and men who are struggling with unintended pregnancy. This webinar will discuss current management recommendations for women dealing with unintended pregnancy, from both a medical and spiritual perspective. A panel discussion will further explore how to mobilize local churches to assist women with very little resources. A brief update on the status of COVID-19 vaccines will also be presented, followed by a time of Q&A with our guest speakers.

We hope you will join this group of theological and medical experts on Wednesday, February 10 to discuss how to understand truth about the beginning of life, how we can speak into this topic with grace, and how to be an encouraging and supportive resource for others.

Registration is free for national CMDA members. If you would like to attend but are not a member, please email Polly Schoen (pollyschoen.etc@gmail.com) and we can help cover the cost for you!

The Ethics of the Coronavirus Vaccine

January 22, 12:15-1:15pm

Faith & Healthcare Conversation

The Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on our health, economy, and community relationships. Many of us are incredibly excited about the release of new vaccines (Pfizer/Moderna) that promise to end the pandemic. Others hold these vaccines to be ethically inappropriate for Christians to take. Together we will explore the ethical issues related to these vaccines (and vaccines in general), and seek to discern a wise and faithful way forward.

We will begin with a brief (15 – 20 min) presentation and then break out into smaller groups for discussion for the remaining time.

In collaboration with Anselm House

Come and join Mike Chupp (the new CEO of National CMDA) as he discusses a biblical view on this issue and how we can best show love to our neighbors and those who disagree with us in this polarized world. Anselm House Virtual Forum

Sept 25, 2020

Co-Sponsored by The Carver Project and The Theology, Medicine, and Culture Initiative

The Coronavirus has presented an immense challenge to our medical and public health institutions. Not only has it revealed inequity and other failures in our healthcare system, it has also revealed deep seated problems in how we understand medicine, suffering and illness. Where medicine reaches the limits of its power, faith communities often try to attend to the patient’s deeper needs. But what do we do when medical responses to the pandemic prevent meaningful spiritual care? How should medical and spiritual frameworks interact?
