Will my unit have more than one senator?
All units are allotted at least one senator and one alternate. Many units are represented by more than one senator. The greatest benefit of serving with multiple senators is the ability to divide P&A Senate duties and reporting. Senators and alternates from different job classifications within one unit are able to provide varying perspectives on P&A concerns in their area. This is especially helpful when P&As are located across multiple buildings or campuses.
Senators and alternates may want to meet at the beginning of each academic year to discuss who will be responsible for specific duties.
Occasionally, senators and alternates within a single unit are serving different terms. It may be helpful for senate members in the middle of their term to meet with the new senate members to mentor them on the culture and practices of P&As in their unit, as well as the workings of the P&A Senate.
How do I find the other senate members in my unit?
The P&A Senate website lists senators and alternates for each unit: https://usenate.umn.edu/pa-senate/senators
What tasks should we work on in our unit?
The Tasks for Unit Senators document outlines required and suggested tasks that should be considered for each unit. These tasks can be divided among the senators and alternate.
Recruiting new senators
Succession planning - It is helpful to identify P&A employees to run for election as seats open or when senator or alternate terms are ending.
Open seats - The Outreach Subcommittee will contact senators and alternates in units with open seats, often in the fall, and provide further information for recruitment to fill open seats.
