P&A SENATE MEMBER ORIENTATION
What Is the P&A Senate?
The Professional and Administrative (P&A) Senate represents academic professionals and administrators across all campuses of the University of Minnesota who number just over 7,000 (as of 2023). P&A work in diverse job categories throughout the University system, including teachers, researchers, program directors, counselors, budget managers, department administrators, and those who reach out to residents across all 87 Minnesota counties. In 1980, P&A comprised six percent of the employee population at the University, and by 2023, P&A made up 28% percent.
The P&A Senate works primarily in four areas:
benefits and compensation;
communications;
outreach; and
professional development and enrichment.
The P&A Senate is one of four component governance bodies in the University Senate. All of the senates are advisory to central administration and the Board of Regents (BOR).
P&A Senate Membership
The P&A Senate is composed of the following voting members from 34 units across the system:
elected members of the P&A Senate;
elected members of the P&A Consultative Committee (PACC), if not already elected to the P&A Senate;
P&A Senate members elected to the University Senate whose terms on the P&A Senate have expired; and
