Term of Office

How long is my term of office on the P&A Senate?

P&A senators and alternates are elected to three-year terms. Terms begin on July 1. Elected P&A senators and alternates may also be elected to serve on the University Senate, where they will bring P&A concerns and issues to the table (this is also for a three-year term).

Can I serve more than one term?

Elected members of the P&A Senate can serve two consecutive terms (or up to six consecutive years), and will be eligible for re-election only after a one-year interval of nonmembership in the P&A Senate.

What if I have to leave the University or my unit in the middle of my term?

The Outreach Subcommittee, in cooperation with the University Senate Office, monitors vacated seats throughout the year and makes an effort to fill empty seats to ensure adequate representation for all units. Vacancies in the P&A Senate may be filled by the elected alternate of the unit who would serve out the remainder of the vacant term. Vacancies without a willing or available alternate will be filled in accordance with procedures determined by the constituencies of the relevant voting unit.

When do elections take place?

Elections take place every spring to fill expired or vacant seats. Each unit has its own election procedures, but in general, elections take place between April 1 and May 15 each year.
