Courses taken at another University, which were taken for graduate credit outside of an undergraduate degree program, taught by faculty authorized to teach graduate courses, may be petitioned to be approved for transfer. Credits must be appropriate to the degree and and fulfill a degree requirement.
A minimum of 12 course credits and 24 Ph.D. thesis credits must be taken at the University of Minnesota.
Approval process:
Make sure the U of MN has a final copy of your transcript from the university you previously attended. A transcript must be sent directly from the school to graduate admissions. https://grad.umn.edu/admissions/application-instructions/official-transcripts-credentials
Email your faculty advisor for transfer credit approval. You will need to include a course syllabus or a description for each class so your advisor knows what was covered and the number of credits. It's easiest to provide a list (here you can see a template) with the information included for each transfer course.
Email the message of what courses your faculty advisor approved and the list of courses and syllabus/description to the Graduate Program Coordinator (ecedgsoffice@umn.edu). It will then be passed along to the Director of Graduate Studies for the next level of approval and to the Graduate School if the courses are from an international university.
After the courses are approved, the Graduate Program Coordinator will add the transfer credits onto your GPAS and/or notify if any courses were not approved.
