System and Resources

MEdIS

The Medical Education Information System (MEdIS)  is where MS3 and MS4 students schedule their clerkships.  An example of scheduling periods can be found here.  Below are terms and instructions on how to navigate MEdIS, read clerkship sites, and check capacity.  Instructional slides for how to add, drop and move courses can be found here.

Course Directory

The course directory has detailed listings for all clerkships available to students.  The fields at the top can be used to filter results and find options in a specific department, courses offered during a specific semester, or courses that meet a specific credit requirement.  The page for a specific clerkship will have contact information for the Course Director and Course Coordinator, a link to current capacity, the catalog description and course objectives.

If students are interested in which clerkships are offered in Duluth,  they can also reach out to Joann Scozzari (scozj@umn.edu). These courses should also be listed in the course directory and searchable via filters.

Sites

Each course has a scheduling code listed next to the clerkship name, which represents the location a student will be at for the course.  Students can check the course directory  to see which site the code refers to for a particular clerkship. Students may choose a specific site for many of the elective courses. For core lane clerkships, students will either be assigned to AS-1000 (Twin Cities) or DU-1000 (Duluth) sites.  Specific Twin Cities site placements will be made after the add/drop deadlines pass for the periods in which they are scheduled (see below).

Students can also use the following report to search by site name or site code to see which courses offer the site as an option.

Assigned Sites (AS-1000 & DU-1000)

Some clerkships will be listed as assigned in the course directory and listed at the site code “AS-1000” or "DU-1000" in MEdIS.  Students may schedule the course.  The clinical scheduler or course personnel will assign the site after the add/drop deadline for that period has passed.

Capacity

There are a certain number of available slots per course, per period and per site.  Capacity can be accessed from either clicking on a period in MEdIS and viewing the course or by going to the course directory and searching by course.  Each course will have a link to the capacity per school year. *Note that students may have to choose the correct year in the drop-down of this report.* This report should refresh automatically, but students may also press refresh at the bottom left corner of the report to see the most up-to-date information.  Below are terms that are used on these pages.

Course is at Capacity

When this message appears next to a course, this means that there is no more capacity in that course for that particular period.

Site is Full

One specific location for this course is full; there may be additional capacity at other sites for that period.

Add/Drop Deadline

This is the date by which students will be allowed to make any changes for a particular period.  After this date, students must get permission to add or drop or move courses covered by this deadline. A list of the add/drop deadlines can be found on the scheduling tab in MEdIS, using the drop down for “add/drop deadlines” on the side.  They are also linked at the top of the page at z.umn.edu/Clinical-Scheduling.
