My approach to Academic Advising is student-centered through a lens of racial equity and social justice. I build trusting relationships and create welcoming spaces where students' identities and lived experiences are honored and where they can be their full authentic selves. I seek to support students holistically as they navigate college and explore their identities through various advising frameworks and theoretical perspectives. My advising praxis includes a subscription to the theories and concepts of self-authorship, growth mindset, social justice counseling, and proactive advising. I believe each student is naturally creative, resourceful, and whole and that their identities and lived experiences must be honored and affirmed in advising, in the classroom, and beyond. As a steward for college student life, my purpose is to ensure each student I work with feels a sense of belonging, and is empowered to thrive at this institution, where they may articulate and achieve their academic goals and career aspirations.
My advising practice in higher education is based on a passion and commitment to racial equity and social justice. I understand that students experience me and the university through their own unique lens based on their intersecting identities and lived experiences and that at times this institution may present barriers and/or unwelcoming spaces for students who have historically been excluded and marginalized. I strive to create an inclusive and equitable environment where all students’ identities are honored and affirmed (including race, gender, expression, class, sexuality, religion, culture, ethnicity, ability, language, country of origin, immigration status, and many more.) You can trust that I will honor and affirm all of your identities and all that you bring to this institution. Should you ever have any questions or concerns, please know that I welcome your perspective and feedback.
