Schedule Builder provides many tools for you to customize your search. Below are four common filters and how to use them.
Click "Class Search" on the left side menu to access filters
Annoyed that all the classes you search for are closed? Limit the search to only show you classes that are open and/or have an open waitlist.
This is especially useful if you need to find a class with a specific number of credits, such as if you're searching for English and can't take a 3-credit class.
You can also find smaller classes this way! Set an "upper limit" of 2 to only find 1-2 credit classes.
Find classes to fulfill one or more specific liberal education requirement(s). For example, you can see courses across a variety of departments and colleges that all relate to the environment:
Check "Require courses to have [all of] the following liberal education requirements."
Check "Environment."
Search for classes that are in-person, remote-instruction (usually meeting at fixed times each week on Zoom), asynchronous online formats, or blended formats.
Done Building the "Perfect" Schedule in Schedule Builder?
Once you've finished creating your desired schedule and are ready to register, use the Send to Shopping Cart button to move your classes to the MyU Shopping Cart.
Wait, you're not done yet! Sending courses to your shopping cart does not enroll you in the course(s).
Select A-F for the grading basis.
Select "Yes, put me on the waitlist if the class is full." (it will ask this even if there are open seats in the course)
Once they are in your MyU Shopping Cart, follow the steps below:
Log into MyU and select the Academics tab.
Click the Registration sub-tab.
Click the Register (Shopping Cart) button.
Select the appropriate term (Fall 2024) and click Continue.
Once your classes are in your Shopping Cart, click the Proceeded to Step 2 of 3 button to continue registration.
Confirm your class selections, and click Finish Enrolling.
View your results. A green checkmark indicates you were successfully enrolled.
If you see any red x marks, read the error message and follow up with the Peer Advisor or your Academic Advisor.
In general, if there is a class you want to try to register for, you have several options:
Contact the instructor via email and ask for a permission number. If granted, this number will override the enrollment cap and allow you to add yourself to the class. These are time-sensitive, often expiring after 24 or 48 hours, so once you request a permission number, be diligent about checking your email.
Permission Numbers: Permission numbers allow you to enroll in a closed (full) course. Follow these instructions to Enter a Permission Number
Contact the Department offering the course and request a permission number. You may have to do this because not all departments allow their professors to give out permission numbers.
Attend the first day of class. If you are able to attend the first day of a class (do not skip a class that you are already registered for in order to do this) and a student who was registered does not show, you can be assigned their place in the class per the U of M's First-Day Attendance Policy.
Keep watching the Class Schedule every day, since students change their schedules and spots may open up. Departments may also add additional seats, release reserved seats, or open new sections.
