About ECRT

The University of Michigan’s Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX (ECRT) Office provides support, resources and education to promote a safe and non-discriminatory living, learning, and working environment for all members of the university community in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. 

• ECRT is responsible for addressing allegations of discrimination, harassment, and misconduct within the U-M community in compliance with federal and state nondiscrimination laws. Reporting concerns helps ensure individuals affected by harm are offered timely support, care, and access to institutional resources. 

• ECRT is a reporting resource and addresses concerns that fall within the University’s Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct Policy, Pregnancy & Parenting Policy, and Discrimination & Harassment Policies. The prohibited conduct under these policies include discrimination and discriminatory harassment on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, marital status, disability, religion, height, weight, veteran status, and sexual and gender-based misconduct (misconduct on the basis of sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression). • ECRT provides supportive resources for faculty, staff, and students to support diversity, inclusion, equal access, and equitable treatment in University programs. This includes requestable training offerings on the Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct Policy, sexual and gender-based misconduct prevention workshops, consultation and resource development (from the PEAR office, see below), as well as discrimination and harassment trainings (from the Civil Rights office) and ADA basics, workplace accommodations, and the interactive process to creating disability-inclusive spaces, etc. (from the Disability Equity office).

• The Prevention, Education, Assistance, and Resources (PEAR) office sits within ECRT. PEAR provides sexual and gender-based misconduct prevention education for U-M employees, including faculty, staff, and student employees across Ann Arbor, Flint, and Dearborn campuses, and Michigan Medicine. The PEAR team also offers consultations with all faculty and staff leaders, and we assist units and departments as they holistically respond to sexual misconduct within their individual communities.  

• ECRT helps visitors, students, faculty, staff, and applicants navigate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), including but not limited to, employee accommodations, digital and physical accessibility, American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) services, events/sporting events, and guidance on service and support animals on campus.

About Student Legal Services

Student Legal Services (SLS) is a full-service law office consisting of five attorneys, one paralegal, and an office manager. SLS provides legal advice and representation to currently enrolled U-M (Ann Arbor only) students in the following areas:

• landlord/tenant disputes 

• divorce and family law 

• criminal defense 

• consumer issues

• immigration

• notary and true copy services 

Services are free to the student except for any court-related fees. SLS cannot assist students in disputes with the university or other enrolled students.

Please ask students to call to schedule an appointment to meet with an attorney because legal advice is not given over the phone.

About the Office of the Student Ombuds

The Office of the Student Ombuds supports students who need help navigating policies, procedures, unfair treatment, or other campus concerns. Students can discuss their questions, complaints, and concerns about the functioning of the university confidentially in a safe environment.  Contact them when you:

• Need support in talking to others about a difficult situation

• Have feedback about university policies or procedures

• Need to discuss conflicts, concerns, or complaints

• Would like coaching in conflict resolution skills

• Are looking for referrals or connections to campus support networks

About SRR

Student Resolution Resources (SRR) ensures students, organizations, and campus partners have access to meaningful support when facing conflict, harm, or accountability processes. The SRR team prioritizes education, fairness, and dignity in every interaction, whether someone is seeking help informally or needs more formal university involvement.

SRR is the umbrella unit for two specialized offices:

• Office of Student Conflict Resolution (OSCR): Supports students with voluntary, restorative, and educational approaches such as conflict coaching, mediation, facilitated dialogues, and workshops.

• Office of Student Accountability (OSA): Oversees investigations, hearings, and accountability processes for alleged violations of the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities, including hazing and cases requiring compliance with federal law.

Any concern can be brought to any part of SRR, and you will be guided to the right process and support.
