About CRLT

CRLT partners with LSA faculty, graduate student instructors (GSIs), and academic leaders to advance and sustain a university culture that values and rewards teaching, respects and supports individual differences among learners, and creates learning environments in which diverse students and instructors can excel. Orientations and teaching academies are followed by many opportunities for further professional development, including the following:

• Consultations: CRLT staff are available to consult on a broad range of topics and to collect and discuss midterm student feedback. Appointments can be made through the CRLT website or by emailing crlt@umich.edu.

• Grants: Individual faculty and collaborative groups can apply for funding to pursue instructional innovations. 

• Seminars and Learning Communities: CRLT runs interactive seminars each term to provide a forum for exploring topics in teaching with colleagues from across campus. 

• LSA Large Course Initiative: This semester-long learning community is designed for faculty who wish to use innovative approaches to engage students in courses with enrollments greater than 75. 

• CRLT’s Foundational Course Initiative (FCI): FCI consultants partner with department teams in a multi-year collaboration to transform large, gateway courses into engaging, equitable, and inclusive learning experiences for all students. 

• Customized services: CRLT designs and presents customized programs to address specific teaching and learning needs of LSA Departments, including workshops and retreats, CRLT Players performances on classroom and departmental climate, and assistance with curriculum evaluation and revision. 

• CRLT website: CRLT houses a rich array of web resources on teaching and learning, including preparing to teach and training GSIs. The website also includes a compendium of strategies and research to support equitable and inclusive teaching.

• An Instructor’s Guide to Promoting Student Mental Health and Well-Being: This self-paced Canvas course shares research-based, actionable takeaways on responding compassionately to students in distress, while also recognizing faculty constraints on time, position, and personal expertise. Video case studies present authentic scenarios, prompting reflection on a range of ways that instructors may encounter student mental health concerns. Course modules also include practical advice related to course planning and accommodations.

About LSA TS

LSA TS will help with all of your instructional technology needs and help you create enriching learning experiences for your students.

Instructional Design and Course Consultation

Instructional Consultants help faculty enhance the student learning experience with new teaching methods, learning technologies, course building assistance, and pedagogical use of the LSA instructional environment. Consultants also support faculty while new activities or tools are deployed and help instructors revise when necessary.

Digital Accessibility Assistance

Technology Services staff are available to assist faculty and instructors with accessible course design and materials, as well as with website accessibility and using accessible templates for presentations and documents. Technology Services will provide training, guidance, and in some cases staff assistance.

Funding Opportunities

Technology Services staff are available to explore, plan, and support LSA faculty instructional technology projects and Digital Scholarship projects, including learning about options, organizing ideas, refining the grant application, planning project implementation, and creating assessment strategies. Multiple types of grants are open to instructional staff in the College of LSA - Ann Arbor.

Equipment Loan

LSA TS has four equipment loan centers on Central Campus and one center on North Campus, where LSA instructors, faculty, staff, and U-M students enrolled in LSA or the College of Engineering courses may check out a wide variety of audio/visual equipment for short-term loan. Faculty may request specialized technology equipment needed to support learning experiences to be made available as a loan item for students.

Classroom Technology Support and Instructor Training

LSA TS provides audio-visual equipment and support services for all academic classes and events held in LSA classrooms. The majority of the classrooms are equipped with hybrid instruction technology as well as lecture-recording capabilities. For equipment orientation, complete the Online Request Form. Canvas Support

Canvas is U-M's Learning Management System (LMS). All courses have a Canvas course site automatically created each term, and student and teacher accounts are automatically added according to enrollment. All instructors are encouraged to use the Canvas site for, at minimum, posting your syllabus and making course announcements. Final grades are submitted via Wolverine Access, but Canvas can make assignment submission and grading, and gradebook calculations far easier. Canvas Instructor Guides are an excellent resource for many how-to questions.

Computer & Desktop Support

LSA TS assists faculty and staff with device requirements, selection, procurement, build, deployment, setup, and orientation activities. Where to start - LSA Technology Services provides advice for technical solutions, purchases, coordination of hardware repairs, and much more.  Working closely with our Media and Service Centers, their goals are to  ensure your IT needs are met through timely, responsive, and empathetic support. 

Data Storage

The University of Michigan has a range of campus storage options. If you have questions about which system to choose, ITS has a Storage Finder you can use to explore options based on your data type and sensitivity level.

LSA TS recommends you consider starting with the following storage options:

• Administrative Data - use Google Drive or DropBox.

• Academic Data - Canvas (for current courses) backed by Google Drive or DropBox.

• Research Data - use Turbo (active storage) or DataDen (archival storage) or Deep Blue (published data). Items of note:

  • Faculty are provided Turbo and DataDen storage allocations through the U-M Research Computing Package.

  • Research Data is governed by the Research Data Stewardship Policy (SPG 303.06).

• Personal Data - LSA strongly recommends that all community members maintain a personal email, calendar, and file storage solution outside their U-M Google identity. This keeps their personal and professional data separate, and ensures that their family and/or next of kin retain long-term access, as appropriate.

Research Support

The Research Computing team works closely with faculty to understand their research technology needs and create tailored solutions. They provide expertise in several research areas:

• High Performance Computing (HPC) - troubleshoot issues, account set up and management, 

• Digital Scholarship (DS) Studio - support for web platforms, education, and consultation in Digital Scholarship & Digital Humanities research & publication, 

• Research Software Engineering (RSE) - build robust, reliable, and secure applications and supporting a variety of technology needs, 

• GIS Consulting - support for geodatabases, web services, geoprocessing, and geoanalytics, and most recently, 

• Research Data Storage - troubleshoot issues, account set up and management

• Research Data Services, and 

• AI Research Consultations.

Software Acquisition

The College of LSA is part of the UmichITAM consortium, a software sharing consortium. You can log into ITS Software Services ITAM Sharepoint site or the U-M Software Directory to browse the software portfolio. LSA Technology Services can also you find, download, and license of other special-use software using this relationship with UmichITAM.

IT Procurement

All technology purchases (including hardware and software beyond the ITAM catalog) must  be facilitated by LSA Technology Services, using the LSA Online Procurement System. This supports your needs by ensuring funding availability, approval coordination, use of strategic suppliers (reducing cost), and compliance with U-M Acquisition, Use, and Disposition of Property SPGs.

Website Services & Support

LSA services include WordPress sites for faculty, labs, courses, conferences, and research projects, Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) implementation for departmental and unit websites, web hosting options, Google Analytics, Mailchimp, Unit Portals and the LSA Gateway.  They also provide ongoing training, support and consulting services.

About Disability Navigators

The newly launched central DEO Disability Navigators program is the result of a successful 3.5-year LSA Disability Navigator Pilot Program, created to identify and address workplace issues affecting LSA employees with disabilities. The DEO Disability Navigators offer support and collaborate in many ways, including: 

• • 1:1 consultations with employees, managers, and supervisors

    • Meeting with a Navigator is not a commitment; it’s a space to ask questions, gather options, and discuss experiences, as we honor self-determination

    • You are always welcome to bring a support person with you to meetings, if desired

  • Accommodation implementation assistance 

  • Reporting and addressing barriers to access

  • Department-level trainings and workshops

  • Barrier-free event planning guidance, including CART and ASL Interpretation coordination

About LRC

The LRC supports faculty in materials development, technology integration, and offer instructional support and consultation. For faculty interested in creating their own materials, two recording studios are available for voice and video production, and the Faculty Development Station (FDS) provides space and equipment for language instructors to do their own instructional project development. 

The LRC regularly hosts, arranges, and sponsors events for faculty, staff, and students. These include a variety of group or individual workshops during the semester or in collaboration with the TTC for the annual Enriching Scholarship, the Language Teaching Forum ("lunch and learn" sessions and lectures on language teaching), or events in collaboration with the wider North Quad community.

About CAI

The Center for Academic Innovation (CAI) collaborates with campus and global partners to create equitable, lifelong educational opportunities for students and learners everywhere. They support Michigan’s Initiative for Transformative Academic Innovation, through which the university aims to revolutionize the way knowledge is accessed, shared, and applied. The center partners with all academic units on campus in support of efforts to:

About the Office of the Registrar

Teaching Evaluations

Students can provide anonymous feedback on their classes and instructors. Teaching Evaluation Reports can become an integral part of your teaching portfolio and are useful when making promotion and award decisions.

Evaluation coordinators order Teaching Evaluations every term for their departments’ classes and instructors. Some departments allow instructors to customize their evaluation forms by adding questions. These additions are made in Blue, the Teaching Evaluation system. You will receive an email when it’s time to preview your evaluation forms and optionally add questions. You can also find student response rates and reports in Blue.  

Exam Scoring

They provide exam-scoring services for departments across campus using University of Michigan Scantron forms. This office provides score processing, examination analysis services, and supplies blank Scantron (answer sheet) forms.

About Sweetland Center for Writing

The Sweetland Center for Writing supports domestic, international, and multilingual students’ writing at all levels and in all forms and modes. See Academic Support for more on student support.

Sweetland also supports instructors teaching writing at the University of Michigan by providing individual consultations and online teaching resources on: 

• creating writing assignments and assessment rubrics, 

• grading contracts, 

• responding effectively to and evaluating student writing, 

• giving constructive feedback to students, 

• designing upper-level writing courses, and 

• working with multilingual students.
