Funding Opportunities

Students in the HBHE doctoral program are admitted with a five year funding commitment during the academic year (fall and winter terms). This guaranteed funding may include appointments on fellowships, graduate student instructorships (GSI), graduate student research assistantships (GSRA) or any combination of the three over the course of the five year period. Funding during your time in the program should be considered a collaborative endeavor with the Department, the student and the students’ advisor.

Students are encouraged to apply for fellowship opportunities that may be used in collaboration with the Department funding to reduce the number of terms someone might be appointed as a GSI or GSRA and for spring/summer support.

The Department and School have a small number of GSI positions that provide classroom experience. In addition to these positions HBHE students have been appointed as GSI’s by other units on campus, including Women’s Studies, Communications, Biology, Psychology and Sociology. A complete list of GSI postings across the University can be found at careers.umich.edu. For more information refer to the Graduate Student Appointment Guide.

The HBHE Department administrator will be working closely with students and their advisor on funding each year. You will be notified when that funding will include a GSI position and our first preference is to fill HBHE GSI positions with our PhD students. You may also be asked to apply for positions outside of the Department, such as in the Public Health Undergraduate program or departments mentioned above. You may, of course, apply for GSI appointments outside of the Department at any time. However, please be sure to keep the Department Administrator, Doctoral Curriculum Committee Chair and your advisor informed of any positions so your funding package can be adjusted accordingly.

A list of recurring funding mechanisms available at the University is included below. These include resources for dissertation research expense support, travel, and spring/summer support. Additional opportunities have been compiled and listed on the HBHE Doctoral Student Group (HBHEDoc).

Hourly Positions:

HBHE faculty and across campus will periodically have hourly paid work available for students. If this is something you are considering during the academic year (fall and winter), be sure to discuss the commitment with your advisor. Also verify with the Department Administrator that this is allowable with whatever other funding you may be receiving (some fellowships/funding sources do not allow additional appointments or have limited hours approved).
