Core Curriculum

Students are required to complete courses at the Ph.D. level in three categories: core curriculum, cognate, and electives. Course selections should be made by students in consultation with their advisor. The basic core curriculum for the program consists of four doctoral seminars, a minimum of three additional substantive courses offered by the department, two courses in advanced research methods, two advanced level courses in data analysis, and two terms of supervised research experience. Students must also achieve a basic level of proficiency in basic biostatistics and epidemiology. Please refer to Basic Statistics document for examples of courses across the University taken by prior students to satisfy these requirements. Other courses that are not listed in this document may satisfy core curriculum requirements. Students who do not have an MPH from an accredited School of Public Health must complete the Foundations of Public Health Practice. Questions that remain after discussion with faculty advisors can be directed to the Doctoral Curriculum Committee.
