I. Letter from the President

Paulina Rajski, IOE '23 / Design Science '24

Dear EGL Alumni,

I hope this message finds you well, safe, and in good spirits! As the fall term of 2023 has drawn to an end, I wanted one last opportunity to share some EGHighlights as your outgoing president.

This past semester, we had our fourth annual camping trip, made some wonderful society memories, and had a Professional Development trip to Chicago! Our Chicago Trip allowed us to connect with three fantastic companies including the Chicago Cubs, SpiderRock Advisors, and The Keystone Group. We hosted Global Bonanza this year with over 300 participants enjoying cultural foods, activities, and learning about student orgs. This semester we also had our very first EGL Mentor/Mentee scavenger hunt where pairs searched all over campus for hidden clues. We hosted an alumni panel during our October General Body Meeting (GBM) and had five amazing alumni come and speak to our eager EGL student body. Thank you again Gina McGauley, Nick Paris, Celia Osman, Max Smith, and Jason Kertayasa for participating!

We had five EGLs in the top three places for Spotlight! this year. First place was taken by an all-EGL three-person team — the project was Target with Alexios Avrassoglou, Santiago Currea, and Austin Tauber. We also had an all-EGL team come in third place — the project was AIP with Christian George and Ziyu Han. Absolutely inspiring seeing all of their hard work pay off from the summer! Isabel Rolfe took home the Tauber Alumni Scholarship to round out a great day for EGL.

As my last official duty as President, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to all of the wonderful alumni that make all of these events possible. The EGL experience would not be the same without your unwavering support whether that be through attending dinner at the annual Chicago Trip event, contributions to the Alumni Fund for Global Leadership, or attending Topics in Leadership sessions for Connect Effect! As I pass the torch to the next President, I am eager to announce to all of you our incoming president, Danny Colón. We are in more than capable hands. Do not hesitate to reach out at egl.president@umich.edu.

Thank you all again, it has been a privilege and an honor.

Best, Paulina

II. EGL Year in Review

III. Student Society Update

Annual Chicago Trip

EGL’s annual Professional Development Chicago Trip was a great success with 47 EGLs attending! We visited three engaging companies (see below!) and ended the day with an alumni dinner sponsored by the Tauber Institute for Global Operations! We are grateful to the companies, alumni, and Tauber Institute who supported us and helped make this great learning and networking opportunity possible.

The Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field

The day started off in Wrigleyville where we took a quick tour of the world's best venue to watch a baseball game, Wrigley Field. After a brief stadium tour and our group picture, EGL students participated in a panel discussion with members of the Chicago Cubs data science and software engineering teams. In this panel discussion students were able to learn how they can apply the engineering lessons they have learned here at Michigan and translate them to the field of sports entertainment. We were able to ask questions from team members in Baseball Systems (internal software to support team development), Baseball Technology (physical technology used for team development), and Baseball Analytics (think Jonah Hill in Moneyball). Through this panel discussion students were able to ask about what technology brings home championships, what skills sports teams are looking for, how we might be able to join the team at the Cubs, as well as some fruitless attempts to learn more about moves the Cubs plan to make in the offseason. This was an eye-opening experience for the students to see just how many places an engineering degree and analytical mindset can take you.

SpiderRock Advisors

After the Cubs we had the amazing opportunity to meet with Eric Metz (EGL Alum from the Class of 2003) and his team at SpiderRock Advisors, a Chicago based company focused on reducing the barriers to options trading through software solutions. Here, students were able to learn a lot about the origin, goals, and team that Eric has built at SpiderRock Advisors. In this presentation students were able to hear Eric's story all the way from his introduction to finance as he went through EGL, his time working on trading floors, and how all of that inspired him to start SpiderRock Advisors. Student's asked a variety of questions around the solution's SpiderRock is developing, the companies SpiderRock works with, and the potential ways EGL students could support the goals of SpiderRock if we were to work there. Similar to the experience at the Cubs, many students left SpiderRock amazed by the opportunities that can come when you combine a Michigan Engineering education with EGL!

The Keystone Group

The third and final visit of the day was The Keystone Group is a management consulting firm based ut of Chicago serving mid-market manufacturing and distribution clients and their stakeholders, focusing on growth strategy, operational improvement, turnarounds, and mergers and acquisitions. At the Keystone Group, Sam Dion (EGL Class of 2017) took us on an office tour, introduced us to his team members, and gave a company presentation. EGL students were eager to learn about the opportunities, benefits, and challenges that come with working at a boutique firm vs. a larger consulting firm as well as the key things that set The Keystone Group apart from its competition. Following the presentation students were able to meet with other team members from around the office to hear more about a day in the life of a Keystone employee. Whether it was the milkshakes, the view of Chicago, talking to current employees, or the work done at Keystone, all of EGL left excited about what they had learned during the visit.

Alumni Dinner at Lou Malnati’s

To wrap up the day, we hosted 12 alumni and their partners at the Lou Malnati’s in Gold Coast. The dinner was a great opportunity for current EGL students to interact with EGL alumni informally and learn more about how many amazing paths we can take! We are grateful to the Tauber Institute for Global Operations for sponsoring this event.

Global Bonanza 2023

At Global Bonanza 2023, EGL cultivated an environment for cultural awareness at the Duderstadt Center and in the Connector. Cultural Chair Nick Hoffman, Developmental Vice President Christian George, and the Global Bonanza Committee were able to reach out and help organize booths from multiple different organizations. They also provided a diverse selection of food, with options from four restaurants: Condado, Palm Palace, TK WU, and Jamaican Jerk Pit. In total, over 300 students attended, and we expect to continue the success next year! Thank you to the Global Bonanza Committee: Felix Liu, Jaidyn Chauhan, Kion Young, Mariana Fernandez Correa, Max Golub, Alexios Avrassoglou and Megan Beemer!

The First Intramural Sports Championship in Modern EGL History!

This semester, the EGLakers (4-3-0) — our Men’s Recreational 3v3 basketball team — earned their IM Sports Champions T-shirts through grit, heart, courage, perseverance, and lights out shooting from beyond the arc. Like all EGLs, this team showed the determination to outwork others, with many playoff games not even being close! Special congratulations to Neal Sinha, Max West, Christian George, Oscar Roden, Max Golub, Felix Liu, Jay Tatikonda, and our guest player Cody Kegley.

While our other IM teams may not have reached the same heights, the seasons were still full of teamwork and a fiery competitive spirit. Thank you to all who contributed!

Board Election Results

At our December GBM, we held elections for the new student society board. For the second straight year, we were able to reserve the Robertson Auditorium in the Ross Business School for the special occasion. It was a great opportunity for students to speak in front of a large group of people, and in the end, we had our newly elected board. Everyone who ran did an amazing job, and congratulations to the 2024 EGL student board!

This year, we created a new board position — Marketing Chair. Due to increased demands of an online presence, this role will act under the External Vice President to post on Instagram, work on promotional content for EGL Society events, and update the newly launched EGL Honors Student Society website.

IV. EGL Honors Society Website

Our External Vice President, Alexios Avrassoglou, has worked hard to create a society website this semester (which, of course, you are reading this EGLink from!). For students, this website will provide a centralized location for all society information and available resources. From the alumni perspective, this website will contain information regarding the Volunteer Abroad trips (including past trip blog posts), the EGLink Newsletters (present and past), as well as provide an opportunity for alumni to indicate their interest and capacity in engaging with the EGL society. Lastly, this website will also serve as promotional content for prospective EGLs, so we have included and will continue building out a page dedicated to why you should join EGL. Please feel free to take a look at the newly launched website here! If you have any feedback or ideas, please feel free to reach out to alexiosa@umich.edu.

Do you have anything that you're especially proud of from your time here at Michigan? Something I am proud of from my time at Michigan are all of the friendships that I’ve been a privilege to have. I look forward to making these relationships stronger as we take the next step forward in our lives!

VI. Letter and Requests from Alumni Chair

Jayanth Tatikonda, BME '23 / IOE '23

Hello EGL Alumni!,

In my final EGLink of the year, I want to start by saying it has been my pleasure to serve as your Alumni Chair this past year. I have enjoyed interacting with and getting to know many new faces as well as engaging in other EGBoard responsibilities! We’ve made some changes this year to the Alumni Chair role, including the EGLink format, and Alumni Advisory Board structure! I’m eager to see what the future of this board position entails under the guidance of our new Alumni Chair — Justin Wong, a current Junior studying Computer Science. I’m also excited to officially become part of the passionate and supportive EGL alumni community!

Before I go, I do have some last requests. As you know, the EGL student society leadership has a map detailing where alumni are located and their positions. The goal of this map is to provide a tool for current students to reach out to alumni with similar interests and career paths, and vice versa, and to provide the information to begin a discussion. Furthermore, this helps with coordinating Alumni Meet-ups in the area!  We would appreciate it if everyone could fill out this google form to ensure the map is as up-to-date as possible, regardless of if your information has changed or not.

Additionally, the EGL Student Society encourages our alumni to stay involved in the EGL community not only by advising current students, but also by growing the off-campus EGL community worldwide. To strengthen the EGL alumni community, the Alumni Advisory Board (AAB) constitution is being redrafted to emphasize alumni-alumni and alumni-student connections. We currently have an open geographic role in the Texas area. If you have interest in the open Geographical Lead role, or otherwise being a part of AAB, please email egl.alumni.chair@umich.edu

Best, Jayanth

What is the Alumni Advisory Board?

The EGL Student Society encourages our alumni to stay involved in the EGL community not only by advising current students, but also by growing the off-campus EGL community worldwide.
