Why did you join EGL?

I wanted to shift my career path from a less technical role in biomedical engineering, to a Project Management role. I also found the people in the community very inviting, and unique. Also, the opportunity to take upper level business classes was exciting as well. Lastly, I knew and continue to know that I am not in a rush to start my career, so I am excited to spend another year with my friends.

I joined EGL because all of the professional interests aligned with what I wanted to do in terms of international job opportunities and a business focus. I also joined because I loved the opportunity to Volunteer Abroad each summer. Finally, the culture and community within EGL seemed really adventurous and welcoming, and I wanted to be surrounded by people like that.

I joined EGL because it seemed like the perfect academic program for me to combine my interests in Spanish, Business, and Engineering. Initially, I was set on doing the Spanish/Ross minor, but realized I could achieve the same amount of credits in each simply by joining EGL and doing the International Minor + Ross Focus Area. I thought the idea of being in the program sounded very cool, and would give me opportunities I would otherwise not have via access to the older students, the alumni, and the professional development resources.

-Alexios Avrassoglou, IOE '23 / IOE '24

I joined EGL due to the vast opportunities in terms of business acumen, global education, and the culmination of my studies in a fifth year masters program. I wanted to expand my area of knowledge beyond mechanical engineering and explore these disciplines in order to determine my future career path. I was also intrigued by the professional networking and culture of EGL. Everyone supports and encourages each other to succeed and I knew that was an environment I wanted to be involved in.

What was something you did not expect when joining EGL?

Something I did not expect to find when I joined was such as close-knit community. Other EGLs quickly became some of my closest friends in and outside of the classroom. I am excited to live with other EGLs during our grad year!

-Jayanth Tatikonda, BME '23 / IOE '24

I did not expect to find an active and fun community outside of the professional and academic setting that EGL has. The constant organization of events and trips that help bring everyone closer is something I found so cool, not to mention that most are sponsored and payed for by the university (so cool).

-Alvin Li, IOE '24 / IOE '25

What about the people in EGL stands out to you?

The people in EGL are extremely multi faceted. When I first joined, I was almost overwhelmed by how many different hobbies and talents I was surrounded by. Everyone has their “thing” that they do and I think it encourages a culture of continuous self development and exploration.

-Isabel Rolfe, IOE '23 / IOE '24

The first things that stands out to me is how adventurous everyone is. If I want to plan anything from a road trip to a trip around there world, I know I can ask my EGL friends and I will get at least one person, if not more, to come with me.  I also love that people in EGL are very high achieving, but in a supportive and genuinely helpful way rather than being competitive at all.

-Lizzie Hoyt, ChE '23 / IOE'24

What words would you use to describe EGLs?

Adventurous. Involved. Caring. Outgoing. International.

Favorite EGL Memories

Studying abroad in Madrid with the EGLs, and having moments where I realized that I would look back at all the memories I was making with such fondness.

During my sophomore year, when most of the world was still operating virtually, my new admit class took a trip up north to ski for a weekend. This trip went far in creating new bonds that still last to this day.

My favorite EGL memory was the camping trip during Fall 2021. It was a great time to bond with members I had not known before and come closer with some of my closest friends. We went on a fantastic hike and had a delightful evening filled with laughs.

My favorite memory would be getting to hear everyone’s speech at elections. It really made me understand how important EGL was to people. It was a very wholesome event and it made me appreciate the people around me more! :)

My favorite EGL memory (so far) is doing IM soccer last fall. It was so fun and I got the chance to know people better!

My favorite memory was when me and a huge group of us went camping on the University’s dime (still so cool we can do that). I loved sitting around the campfire with people I just met on that trip and people I have known before cooking over a bonfire and hanging out.

It's hard to choose, but my favorite EGL memory is probably either camping together at Sleeping Bear Dunes or getting invited to dance together at the Blackfeet powwow during VA.

The EGL Chicago trip! It was great to tour some companies and see EGL alumni in Chicago!

My favorite EGL memory was the Hawai'i EGL Volunteer Abroad trip because I grew so close to many EGLers and learned so much about Hawaiin culture. Specifically, my favorite part of the trip was being disconnected from our phones and building a trail into the side of a mountain.

EGL camping trip 2021! The group was roughly only 10 people but I think that made the trip a really great opportunity to have more one on one conversations and get to know everyone better.

My favorite EGL memory is volunteering in Peru in August 2022. This experience not only allowed me to expand my global awareness but also provided a unique opportunity to bond with others and form lasting connections.

My favorite EGL memory is my first Volunteer Abroad trip to Hawaii. Learning about the native Hawaiian story while planting native taro root and removing invasive species was a very touching experience.
