Every shared tradition, story, and experience strengthens our understanding of one another and deepens our sense of global awareness and community.
EGL’s culture-focused programming helps students build global awareness, strengthen cultural intelligence, and foster meaningful connections across backgrounds. Led by the Development VP and Cultural Chair, these events highlight the diversity within EGL and across the University community.
Global Bonanza is EGL’s University-wide cultural event, held annually to celebrate and uplift the many cultures represented at Michigan. The event brings together hundreds of students to:
Learn about cultural student organizations
Participate in cultural activities
Celebrate the diversity of the University’s population
Global Bonanza is one of the few major cultural-student-organization-driven events on campus. EGL students volunteer to manage logistics, run activities, and engage with attendees which all make it a true community effort.
Our commitment to cultural exchange continued this semester with a series of Cultural Potlucks, where members prepared and shared dishes meaningful to their heritage and values. Students introduced foods such as Norwegian kannelboller, Spanish crema catalana, and many others, creating an environment rich with stories, traditions, and personal history.
These potlucks spark conversations about identity and culture, offering a welcoming way for members to learn about one another’s backgrounds and connect through food and shared experiences.
EGL’s Cultural Storytelling Nights invite members to share aspects of their heritage, identity, and lived experiences in creative and meaningful ways. Students choose the format that resonates most with them—stories, dance, artwork, music, food, games, or personal artifacts—creating a warm, open environment for expression.
These events encourage students to reflect on their backgrounds, learn from the diverse experiences of their peers, and deepen their understanding of the cultures represented within the EGL community. Each storytelling night becomes an opportunity for cultural exchange, mutual respect, and stronger community connection.
