The EGL Honor Student Society

Welcome to the EGL Student Society website, established in 2023!

Beyond just being an academic program, EGL is also a student organization! Once students are admitted to the EGL Honors Program, they automatically become members of the EGL Student Society. This group of dynamic students plans cultural, social, service, and development events to connect EGL students with their peers and grow both personally and professionally. Read more below about each of our components!

Membership

Membership focuses on bringing current EGL students together through our mentorship program, monthly General Body Meetings (GBMs), IM Sports, and other social events. Read more here about the sorts of events we do to support and develop our community!

Personal & Professional Development

EGLs develop through the Topics in Leadership (TiL) program, private corporate networking sessions, the annual Chicago Trip, and other leadership opportunities.

TiL is a leadership and professional development series which is entirely student led. TiL 1 is for first-semester EGLs and focuses on developing interview, resume, and networking skills. TiL 2 is the next semester, and focuses on developing your leadership skills, navigating ambiguous situations, developing strong presentation skills, and putting all these into practice. TiL 3 is for graduate students and focuses on preparing you for life post-graduation. Read more here about how you can grow by joining EGL.

The Volunteer Abroad (VA) Program

The EGL Volunteer Abroad (VA) Program is a 1 to 2 week culturally immersive experience every August where EGLs are exposed to a new culture while doing volunteer work either domestically or internationally. VA’s purpose is to have EGLs learn from the non-profit organizations we work with, meet people from around the country, and fully immerse ourselves in a new place. Through the support of the Seth Bonder Foundation, EGL Alumni and Community Members, and the College of Engineering, EGLs are able to take part in this experience with heavily subsidized costs. Read our blogs from our past VA trips here!

Cultural Education

EGLs' cultural development is achieved through the Global Education pillar. Each year, EGL plans Global Bonanza, an event that hundreds of students attend to celebrate cultural organizations on North Campus. The Volunteer Abroad program (more below) further develops students cultural acuity with hands-on experiences. Finally, we routinely celebrate EGLs' own diversity through cultural potlucks and games! Read more here about the cultural events we do.

Community Service

One pillar of the EGL Honors Program is Leadership Experience and you are required to do 6 hours of community service over the course of a semester. The Student Society Community Chair coordinates and brings visibility to service opportunities so that students can put into practice what they learn through Topics in Leadership and give back to the local community. Read more here about the different community service projects we've done.

Alumni Community

After receiving their graduate degree and becoming alumni of the Society, alumni go on to amazing things across every industry. The combination of leadership development, the Tauber Institute Capstone Project, and the graduate degree create an environment that prepares EGLs to make a profound impact wherever they go. Our alumni community is hundreds strong, and they constantly give back to the EGL Society through offering job and networking opportunities, contributing to the Volunteer Abroad fund, acting as a support network for the current members, and overall, making a name for EGL wherever they go!
