1. DO NOT USE the following buttons if your coach is set up to automatically bring grades in from a learning management system:
Add assignment category
Add assignment
If you use these buttons, your changes will be overridden every day when ECoach syncs with the LMS.
2. Before anything else, make sure you set up the "Edit gradebook" page. See Setting up the gradebook below.
Check out our Canvas Best Practices for extra tips.
ECoach synchronizes with the LMS gradebook (Canvas or Moodle) about every 8 hours. You can also sync it manually on the main Gradebook Manager page by clicking the Sync Now button.
Keep an eye on changes an instructor might make during the term. If the instructor used placeholder assignment names at the start of the term and changes them at the time of grading, you'll need to reconnect them to MTS characteristics for tailoring.
Currently you can only migrate the grading scale and certain MTS characteristics from a previous term.
Choose a term from which to migrate.
Select all of the characteristics you want to migrate to your new coach. You will need to create and publish these characteristics in your MTS dictionary first.
Click Migrate.
Your migrated grading scale will appear on the Gradebook Manager page, and you can see any migrated MTS characteristics by click the "Edit gradebook" pencil icon next to your course's gradebook name.
Before you do anything else, click on the "Edit gradebook" pencil icon next to your course's gradebook name.
Section: This field is only relevant if you have different grading schemes for different sections. Contact ECoach support if you need more than one gradebook.
Source: This is critical to set. Without setting this, your gradebook will not be updated. Make sure the source you choose here is the same coach-level source you assigned in MTS to the grade characteristics (e.g., Exam1_Score) you'll use for tailoring.
Scoring type: Choose a scoring type based on whether or not you assign weights to assignment categories in your course (i.e., homework is worth 10% of the final grade). Most courses use the weighted scoring type.
Curved course: Check this box to let ECoach know that your grades will be curved. ECoach will show points percentages to students instead of letter grades.
Fetch muted: Only check this box if you want ECoach to pull in muted grades from Canvas. Checking this box means muted grades will appear to students in the Grade Calculator.
Set characteristics: If you want to tailor on the items listed here, you'll need to set up characteristics in MTS first that you can then connect here for each item. See Tailoring on grades below.
Do not use this if you automatically bring in grades from Canvas or Moodle.
Label: The name of the assignment category (e.g., Homework).
Weight: The percentage of the overall course grade that this assignment category is worth. If Homework is 10% of the final grade, you would put 10 in this field.
LMS ID: The ID from your LMS (Canvas, Moodle, etc.) that corresponds to this category.
LMS Label: The name of the assignment category as it appears in your LMS.
Behavior category: Contact ECoach Support if you're interested in ECoach's Behavior Data.
Connect to MTS characteristics: To tailor on student performance in this assignment category, you'll need to set up characteristics in MTS first that you can then connect here for each item. See Tailoring on grades below.
Category average: This characteristic is for tailoring on a student's current average grade in this category (e.g., HomeworkPercent).
Missed assignment count: This characteristic is for tailoring on how many assignments a student has missed in this category (e.g., HomeworkZeroCount).
Do not use this if you automatically bring in grades from Canvas or Moodle.
Assignment category: The assignment category that this assignment belongs to.
Label: The name of the assignment.
Grade contributor: If this is left unchecked, the assignment will be excluded from all grade calculations.
Graded: Whether or not the assignment has been graded yet. If left unchecked, grades for this assignment will not be visible to the student.
Max value: The maximum number of points a student can earn on the assignment.
Due date: The assignment due date.
Connect to MTS characteristic: To tailor on student performance on this assignment, you'll need to set up characteristics in MTS first that you can then connect here for each item. See Tailoring on grades below.
Assignment Score: This characteristic is for tailoring on a student's raw points score for this assignment (e.g., HW6Score).
Assignment Percentage: This characteristic is for tailoring on a student's score for this assignment as a percentage (e.g., HW6Percent).
Use this if a single assignment is weighted differently depending on the grading method.
Example: Exam 1 is worth 20% of the final grade in Grading Method 1, but 25% of the final grade in Grading Method 2.
Grade method: Choose the grade method to which this weight applies (e.g., Method 1).
Assignment: Choose the specific assignment that gets a different weight (e.g., Exam 1).
Combined Percentage of Final Grade: For the grade method chosen, specify how much the assignment is worth (as a percent of the final grade).
Also see Grading Method and Category Rule Examples below.
Assignment category: First choose the category you want the rule to apply to.
Grading rule: Choose the type of rule you want to apply. See table of examples below.
Quantity: The number you enter here depends on the rule you apply. See examples below.
ECoach allows you to have multiple grading methods. When ECoach pulls in scores from Canvas or Moodle, it overrides whatever calculations Canvas might have done and instead performs its own calculations, based on what you specify in ECoach. Results of your multiple grading methods appear in Grade Calculator for students, as well.
Logic:
If you want to tailor who sees this grading method, add logic in this box, such as GradeMethodChoice=="ActiveLearning." You can use the same kind of logic you'd use in MTS.
If you want your grade method available to everyone, leave the logic box blank.
Label: Give your grading method a name, such as "With Lecture" and "Without Lecture."
Description: Briefly describe your grade method. This will appear to students in the Grade Calculator.
Active Date: Leave this blank if you want this grade method to apply from the start of the term. Or specify the date and time you want this grade method to activate.
Select the percentage: For each grading method, select the new weight for each grade category. This is used for grade methods that include or exclude certain grade components (like lecture points) or weight certain categories differently.
Also see Grading Method and Category Rule Examples below.
To edit the minimum and maximum cutoffs for each letter grade, click on the "Edit grading scale" pencil icon in the Grading scale box.
The values should overlap. For example if A+ is 97 to 100, A- should end at 97 (as opposed to 96.9).
If you think there's a chance the A+ level can be over 100, make sure the A+ maximum value is also over 100.
If you don't use a certain letter grade, you can delete it.
If your institution uses F instead of E, contact ECoach Support.
Create CSV Template: Choose to upload data for all assignments or a subset of assignments.
For a subset, use the dropdown menu to choose all of the assignments you want to upload data for.
Download CSV Template: This generates a .csv file that is correctly formatted for the data upload. You can use this file OR format your own .csv file to match it exactly.
Upload CSV File: Choose your .csv file to upload to the ECoach gradebook.
If you want to tailor on scores in the gradebook, you'll need to set up characteristics in MTS first that you can then connect here for each assignment or assignment category. Check out our Canvas Best Practices for extra tips.
Create and publish characteristics in your MTS dictionary for any of the gradebook scores you want to tailor on (e.g., "Exam1Score" or "Lecture01Attendance").
Use Sync Now on the Communications Manager page to sync MTS and ECoach.
In the ECoach gradebook, click on the "Edit assignment" or "Edit assignment category" pencil icon next to the assignment or category you want to connect to a characteristic. Then use the pull-down menu(s) under Connect to MTS characteristic to choose the MTS characteristic to assign.
Use the Sync Now button on the Gradebook Manager page to sync MTS and the ECoach gradebook.
Once connected and synced, you can use this characteristic as you would any other tailoring characteristic.
As a substitution: "You got $Exam1Percent on Exam 1."
To tailor bulletin content: use LectureZeroCount>4 to add a tailored encouragement to attend lecture for students with low attendance.
As gating logic: use not isEmpty(Exam1Score) to make sure emails only go to people who have taken the exam.
If you want to tailor on the characteristics listed below, you'll need to set up characteristics in MTS first that you can then connect here for each item.
Create and publish characteristics in your MTS dictionary for any of the items below you might want to tailor on.
Use Sync Now on the Communications Manager page to sync MTS and ECoach.
In the Gradebook Manager, choose the "Edit gradebook" pencil icon next to your course's gradebook name.

Baseline performance measure: Baseline performance measure is currently only available to University of Michigan ECoach users. Contact ECoach Support for more information.
Next to the assignment or assignment category in ECoach, click on the "Copy histogram" button.
In your MTS document, add a text row and paste the identifier into the text box.
Publish the bulletin in MTS, then use the Sync Now button on the Communications Manager page to sync MTS and ECoach. You should see the testimonial in your ECoach bulletin. You may need to refresh the page.
Grade Calculator can be turned on or off at any point during the semester. Check out our Canvas Best Practices for extra tips to make sure Grade Calculator is properly calculating people's grades.
Go to the Coach Details page and click the "edit coach" pencil icon under "Coach Info."
Look for the section labeled Coach features and check (to turn on) or uncheck (to turn off) the Grade Calculator checkbox.
All active grading methods will appear to students in the Grade Calculator.
Students can access Grade Calculator from the left side menu of the coach homepage, OR from the grade visualization further down the homepage if you have that feature turned on:
Example 1 - Weighting exams
Imagine you have 3 grade methods that weigh each exam differently. The total weighting of the exams is always 80% and all other assignments are held constant.
In this case you would:
Add 3 grading methods, label them Method 1, Method 2, and Method 3. For each, you would NOT change any of the percentages for each assignment category (because it's static at 80%).
Add three assignment weights (one for each exam) for each of the 3 grading methods, so 9 assignment weights in total.
Example 2 - Including and excluding lecture points
Imagine you want to calculate grades with and without lecture points.
In this case you would:
Add a grading method and label it Without Lecture.
On the Edit grading method page, assign the percentages you want for each grade category.
Add a second grading method labeled With Lecture, and use the same process to assign the correct percentages.
