Group students based on certain characteristics like scores and survey responses
Example: Students with low confidence but high scores
Example: Students with low confidence and low scores
Create a new MTS characteristic using this group's criteria and use it for tailoring
Create collections of your groups
Example: Students with low confidence
Before you create an insight group, ask yourself:
Why do I need these data? What will I gain?
What will I do once I have these data?
How will that benefit the students?
Am I using only relevant data?
What implicit biases should I be careful to avoid? Read: Types of Biases in Data
Step 1 - Create the group
Click Add Group.
Group Name: Name your group.
Add Group to Collection (optional): If you've created a collection and want to add this group to it, select the collection from the dropdown. See more about adding collections below.
Source / Assign MTS Characteristic:
Only choose a Source and MTS Characteristic if you want to save this group's data as a new MTS characteristic to use for tailoring (see Advanced Tips for more). You need to create and publish a new characteristic in your MTS dictionary first.
If this group is just for your information, leave these blank.
Click Save.
Step 2 - Add data details to the group
Once you've created your group, click Details.
Click Add Rule.
Next, choose the MTS Characteristic you want to use for your rule, and set the Operator and Value. Here's an example:
MTS Characteristic: CurrentScore
Operator: less than
Value: 80
Add other rules for your group as you need to.
Example: GradeConfidence less than or equal to 7
Note: If students don't answer, their score is recorded as a -1, which means a rule like GradeConfidence<=7 includes people who didn't answer. Sometimes you might want empty answers... but if not, add another rule that's GradeConfidence>=1, for example.
Step 3 - Sync your student data.
After your group's details are ready to go, click Sync Now to tell ECoach to sync with the database and actually look for students who match your criteria.
Your Insight Group data will automatically sync every 2 to 3 hours.
Pro-Tips
If Membership Data sync status reads "In-progress," you don't need to click sync again.
If the sync takes more than 5-10 minutes, try reloading the page.
Click Add Collection.
Name your collection.
If you create your collection before your groups, you can choose it when you create your groups.
Or if you create your collection after your groups, you can edit your groups to choose the right collection.
In the Details for an insight group, you'll see a section called Group Distribution.
Choose an MTS characteristic to see how your insight group is distributed across that characteristic.
Example: For your LowConfHighScore group, you might want to look at another concept like Procrastination.
Once you choose the characteristic, you'll see a table with the range of answers given by the members of your insight group.
If a characteristic isn't appearing in your list, make sure it has values or a range set up in your MTS dictionary (and is published).
You can use the same data rules you set up in your insight groups for tailoring.
Add your new characteristic to MTS and publish your dictionary.
Example: LowConfHighScore, LowConfLowScore
In the Details for the appropriate insight group, click Edit and choose your course's source and the new MTS characteristic.
Click Save.
Now you can use this MTS characteristic in ECoach logic or MTS documents for tailoring.
Insight group data will automatically sync every 2 to 3 hours.
