Joy of Jewels: A Clay Jewelry Workshop

Abstract

A workshop following the learned fundamentals of clay and creation of jewelry through this medium. Students get to explore the different types of clay, it’s different forms, names, and apply that to their jewelry-making skills. The workshop provides a balance of group work, warmups, individual tasks, and learning segments. The workshop consists of learning how gender and sexuality can reflect the different ways we perceive jewelry to be worn. Helping to destigmatize the notion of gender stereotypes jewelry. The workshop reflects on working past these stereotypes and aiding in self-expression and exploration of their own lens of creativity and painting to create the final designs of their work. At the end of the semester, students would finish a jewelry set consisting of rings, necklaces, and earrings and are presented with a surrounding theme between them all. The workshop is intended for those who want to know more about jewelry art, and are not afraid of things getting a bit messy.
