In line with the demands of Malaysia’s aspiration to be an innovation-led economy, UM is also undergoing a transformation in many areas. As Malaysia’s first university, UM needs to be a major global player in providing quality education as well as doing innovative and impactful research. Towards this end, a conducive environment to further develop a robust research and innovation culture among researchers has been provided.
This section contains the brief overview of the scopes of research management, as well as roles and responsibility of the Head of Responsibility Centre. Subjects include, but are not limited to, research collaborations, stakeholder engagement, research funding, high impact publications etc.

Establishes collaborative research with world class academic institution to develop impactful research projects that address real world issues relevant to the society and industry.

International Relations Centre coordinates the university's international collaborations and fostering partnerships with institutions across the globe
Research Clusters establish collaborative research with national and international academic institutions.

Creates projects with impact beyond academia, by consciously incorporating elements of impact into their project at all stages.
Promotes effective engagement between researchers with stakeholders and research beneficiaries right from the stage of project ideation.
Industrial Relations Division (for Industries / Agencies / Ministries) serves as a one stop centre for industries to connect and explore engagement opportunities, establish and strengthen collaborations between both parties.
Research Clusters (for Industries / Agencies / Ministries) establish collaborative research with public and private agencies and manages matters related to research engagement and collaborations.
Community Network Centre (for Communities) works with the society through community-engagement projects, strategic targeting of demographic groups within the community, and by strongly involving community members in the projects.

Ensures funding sustainability through competitive grants applications through funding opportunities via internal and external grants. Click here to learn more.
Research Grant Management Division explores funding opportunities and liaises with funders.
Research Clusters coordinate actual planning and preparation of grant preparation of proposal as well as identify relevant researcher.

Identifies important research efforts and recognition mechanism.
Communicates results with others to advance their research field.
Institute of Research Management and Services provides a centralised research management facility for researchers within and outside the campus.
