Work with one student at a time: this is for privacy reasons.
A tutoring session lasts 30 minutes at most.
Be sure to dedicate 5 minutes at the end to fill out the forms (intake form, feedback to instructor form, evaluation form).
If another student is waiting, let them know you will be ready in about 30 minutes (or less). Also let them know that they can always come back to another session.
Welcome the student with a smile 😀 Introduce yourself, ask them their name and they are doing.
Do not give them your full name or any personal contact information. If they ask to contact you outside tutoring hours, kindly let them know that you are not allowed to make private appointments.
Before you begin working, have the student fill out the Intake Form.
This step helps set the tone of the session and determine the student would like to work on.
If necessary, access the textbook(s) that the student is using in their language course.
We have physical copies for some books, and you can find PDF scans and eBook links on the 100-Level Class Materials page for your language.
Take notes: this shows that you're actively listening to what your tutee has to say! This will also help you fill out the Feedback to Instructor Form at the end of your session after the student has left.
30 minutes maximum! Mention this 5 minutes before you reach that mark so that you can have your tutee fill out the Evaluation Form. To wrap up the session, you can say something like:
"Okay, the time for our session today is almost up. Let's review the things we went over today: [give a brief summary]."
"Before your next tutoring session, I would recommend that you [insert recommendation, for example: "study the vocab on page 56"; "make flash cards with the conjugation for être"; "visit with your instructor during office hours"; "read the passage and highlight [whatever]"; "do the practice activities on page 123"; etc.
"We would be happy to see you again to follow up or to work on another topic! The schedule for tomorrow and the rest of the week is on our website."
Make sure you have all your information needed to fill out the Feedback to Instructor Form: the student can help you fill in the general information (instructor name, email, class time, etc.).
Make sure they fill out the Evaluation Form (but not in front of you).
If they filled out a physical copy, show them the blue mailbox in GH301 where they can leave their filled-out evaluation form.
