Test-Taking Tips

Building Your Knowledge and Understanding

There are many strategies that you can use when faced with a test. The best advice is to prepare a little each day.

What does that mean? It means that by staying current on your day-to-day assignments, and by spending a few minutes each day reviewing the new learning you've done and linking it to what you already know about the subject, you will gradually build up your knowledge and understanding. This is called distributed practice because it happens over time, rather than in one or two marathon sessions of "cramming".

"Studying" for a test, then, is just a natural extension of this knowledge-building process that allows you to review the bigger concepts and see how all of your knowledge fits together or how the knowledge is structured and this structure makes it easier to remember and understand.
