What do kids do in 4-H?

Kids and teens complete hands-on projects in areas like S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math), Citizenship & Leadership, and Healthy living.

They can concentrate on one focus area or they can try a variety of programs throughout their 4‑H experience. Regardless of the project area, all 4‑H programs include mentoring and career readiness as core elements.

Who can participate in 4-h?

4-H is open to all youth, "4-H age" 5-18 that have not yet graduated high school, and is open to all counties in the State of Florida. "4-H age" is determined as of September 1 of the current 4-H program year.

Youth classified as an “exceptional student” and thus determined eligible for a special program by the State Board of Education [Florida Statute 1003.01(3)(a)] shall be eligible to participate in 4-H until the age of 21 years old (National 4-H upper age limit) or completion of high school, whichever comes first.

Youth whose membership age is beyond 18 who have qualified for a National Contest (as a culminating event for their project learning) shall be eligible to participate in the event as long as they qualify as per National Contest policies.

4-H serves youth from all backgrounds and interests through 4-H clubs, short term projects, individual learning and mentoring, camping, and school enrichment.

What project areas does 4-h offer?

4-H Age Divisions

4-H members are able to participate in different activities based on their 4-H Age Division. Age divisions are determined by the youth's age at the start of the 4-H year (September 1st):

Cloverbuds do not pay a membership fee to be in 4-H. They are able to participate in many 4-H activities, but may not participate in large animal projects (horses, goats, cattle, sheep, swine, llamas), shooting sports, or archery.

Cloverbuds may exhibit their projects in some 4-H shows but they do not receive numbered scores or any type of ranked awards for participation in a competition.

How do i Join?

Your first step is to find a club that fits your interest and location! Visit the Clubs Tab to view all clubs in Manatee County, their focuses, and if they have space available for new members.

Some clubs are open to youth ages 5-18, while others cannot accept youth until they are 8 years old.

Community clubs are open to any youth in the county, but after-school clubs can only accept students that go to that school.

Once you have found a club and reached out to the leader to confirm space, you are then encouraged to enroll your youth(s) on 4-H Online 2.0. A youth isn't considered a bonafide 4-Her until they are enrolled and approved in the system.
