Welcome to Orchestra for 9th Graders
Nick Locati
Transition from Middle School to High School
Music Level
Music gets harder, should try and practice more
Practice more with other people in the orchestra
Play with confidence, in class it’s ok to make mistakes, everyone does
Listen to the music we play so you know what it should sound like
Orchestra Community
In High School more people play because they love to play their instruments
Go to Soph Strings or at least try it out, you might be surprised how much you like it
Listen and learn from your section leaders and older students
Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you don’t understand a concept or section in a piece
Practice
In High School practice is needed to stay at the same level as everyone else
The musical terms test might seem daunting at first, but if you study a little everyday it’s not bad
Listening is part of practicing
Challenge yourself on your own time to grow and learn to be better in full orchestra
Each section is important even if you don’t always have solos or the melodies
The video will have examples for each section from my personal experience and I’ll get videos or quotes from other Orchestra students about Freshman Year and other Orchestra topics.
Frank, “I remember my first year in Soph Strings was pretty scary because I didn't know anyone and they were all poking fun at each other, so I felt really awkward. But it's really great if you stick around afterwards. You get to meet tons of people and play in a relatively low-stress environment. As for orchestra class in general, it's always been a good break from all my other academic classes every day. I think it only feels like that after a few years though, so I'd recommend sticking with it.”
