Preceptors report many personal and professional benefits associated with precepting students. These include personal satisfaction in ‘paying back’ for prior personal educational opportunities or ‘paying forward’ to the ‘next generation’ of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). Many preceptors report personal benefits from the stimulation and challenge of working in collaboration with a student. This collaboration often inspires preceptors to develop their teaching skills and investigate the latest literature to identify evidence for current practice. Additionally, precepting offers additional networking and potential provider recruitment into practice settings. Some providers have noted increased productivity when working with students. Patients frequently enjoy the time and attention received when working with students. Finally, preceptors reported serving in this role supported status and recognition within their organizations and advancement within the workplace.
UD SON faculty are ready to provide preceptors with letters of recognition and acknowledgement of hours spent precepting. These hours may be used for recertification or Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits. To request documentation of preceptor hours send an email to sconaty@udel.edu or marianl@udel.edu
Nurse Practitioners: NP preceptors nationally certified by ANCC can count hours precepting students toward their renewal requirements.
