Preceptors serve students as professional and clinical role models. In this role, preceptors foster clinical application of knowledge, professional competency, and autonomous practice. Although preceptors promote a gradual increase in student autonomy over time, preceptors are to maintain adequate supervision over all care provided by students. Preceptors are critical to the DNP student transition into role of an advanced practice nurse.
