Cultural humility is the ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures. It encompasses being aware of one's own world view, developing positive attitudes towards cultural differences, and gaining knowledge of different cultural practices and world views. Now that you have reflected on your own identity, we will discuss how to approach interacting with people of many different identities. In this module, you will learn more about how implicit bias can affect how we approach different people.
"We [must] do the internal change work...to make the external change work possible." - Dushaw Hockett TEDx Talks
1) Educate Yourself: Learn about different cultures, traditions, and social issues. You can do this by reading books, articles, watching documentaries, and taking courses on cultural diversity and inclusion.
2) Reflect on Your Own Biases: Identify and acknowledge your own biases and prejudices. It's important to understand how they might affect your interactions and work to mitigate them. Remember, implicit biases are subconscious associations that often contradict our conscious beliefs.
3) Listen Actively: Practice active listening when interacting with people from different cultural backgrounds and pay attention to their experiences, perspectives, and concerns without interrupting or judging.
4) Practice Empathy: Put yourself in others' shoes and try to understand their experiences and feelings by showing compassion and support for individuals facing cultural challenges or discrimination.
5) Adapt Your Communication: Be mindful of language barriers and non-verbal cues. Make sure to use inclusive language and be patient when communicating with individuals who may have different communication styles.
6) Implement Inclusive Practices: Incorporate inclusive practices in your personal and professional life by being mindful of language, celebrating cultural diversity, and creating an environment where all feel welcomed and valued. This includes asking questions and showing genuine interest in learning about others' cultures.
7) Evaluate and Reflect: Regularly assess your cultural humility and reflect on your interactions. Make sure to seek feedback from others and identify areas for improvement as well.
