Creative Commons Information for Project Submission
The Synthesis Project Portal celebrates SYN 100 projects and provides a resource to future SYN 100 groups looking to conduct background research on their selected topic, or continue a past SYN 100 project that is open for collaboration. To protect intellectual property and know how each group expects others to use their work, every group will select the Creative Commons or Public Domain license that best suits their needs as creators.
what is creative commons?
"Creative Commons licenses give everyone from individual creators to large institutions a standardized way to grant the public permission to use their creative work under copyright law. "
From your SYN 100 group's point of view, a Creative Commons license is an international tool that will provide clear boundaries on how you can use a past group's published work, and how future groups can use yours. These boundaries apply beyond the Synthesis Program and protect your work from being misused anywhere, anytime.
In total, there are 6 Creative Commons Licenses and one Public Domain license. SYN 100 groups can choose between any of them.

Read more about all 6 Creative Commons license choices and the Public Domain below and use the Creative Commons License Picker Tool to make the best choice for your group and your project type. If your group chooses the Public Domain license, you are forfeiting all copyright privileges.
choice #7
If your group chooses to place your project in the Public Domain, you are forfeiting any intellectual property protections granted by other licenses. This means that anyone can use your project without permission and they do not need to credit you for it. On the flip side, the Public Domain allows for the open sharing of ideas, information, and innovation.
so what's commercial use?
A commercial use is one primarily intended for commercial advantage or monetary compensation. No one can reuse or remix your project in the future to make money.
for SA licenses, why would we have to use the same license as the project we are continuing?
The ShareAlike attribute is intended to ensure that use of that work remains open to all. In other words, when building off of a ShareAlike project, you can't remix it, then make money off of it, and close it off to others in the community.
still not sure which CC license is best for your team's project?
a few more things!
Before submitting your work to the Project Portal, make sure you have all of the requested materials prepared and have completed the Author Agreement Form assignment on Canvas.
Your group's project will live on the Project Portal unless the modification and removal process is initiated. Please review the policy before submitting your modification and removal request to synthesis@ucsd.edu.
