All FitLife staff must keep current CPR, AED and First Aid certifications current. Only certifications from the American Red Cross and/or American Heart Association are accepted. You will not be eligible for pay rate increases or benefits if your safety certifications have expired.
You are eligible to take one free class with Recreation per year.
Free CPR/First Aid classes are coordinated by the Recreation for Recreation staff. Registration links and dates are sent via email quarterly from fitlife@ucsd.edu. Please register for the classes directly through the provided links. If you do not receive these emails, please contact fitlife@ucsd.edu.
In the event of an accident, stay with the injured party until help arrives. Do not go beyond the scope of your CPR and First Aid training while rendering assistance.
Send another witness or class participant to the nearest Recreation employee to alert them to the problem and return with help if necessary.
If necessary, have a witness or other class participant call Campus Police 858-534-HELP (4357). Campus Police will make necessary arrangements and provide needed assistance.
First Aid kits are located at the Facility Access desks at both RIMAC, Main Gym and Canyonview.
If there is an open wound and possible exposure to bodily fluid, be sure to use a barrier before treating the wound. Any open wound that can leave behind a bloody residue must be bandaged before activity is resumed. Any bloody residue present in any activity space must be immediately sanitized. Alert a Sports Facility Supervisor immediately.
In the event that YOU are injured on the job, suspend your class/session immediately and excuse the class/participant. Go immediately to Thornton Hospital or UCSD Medical Center Emergency Rooms. Call Dianna Frett immediately at 858-246-3112 and alert her to your condition and location. Call your supervisor as soon as possible and alert them to your condition.
An Accident Report form must be submitted for all incidents
Recreation facilities: All incidents must be immediately reported to the facility supervisor. Please add the following phone numbers to your contacts
RIMAC Facility Supervisor (858) 864-8244
Main Gym Facility Supervisor (858) 864-8210
Off-site: Immediately contact your program manager to share the details of the incident. They will submit an Accident Report Form
In the event of an emergency you may be asked to evacuate a sports facility. Please have your class or client calmly exit the area to the closest evacuation location:
RIMAC/Spanos - North Campus Field
Main Gym/Rec Gym/Natatorium – Muir Field
Canyonview – Warren Field
Call (858) 534-9255, or extension 4-WALK from a campus phone, year-round between sunset and sunrise, to request that a student Community Service Official escort you to your campus destination. After 1 a.m., University Safety Officials may provide this service.
You can arrange a recurring escort so a CSO will meet you at the same place and time, which makes late-night service more convenient.
In the event that an active shooter is on campus or has entered a facility, we recommend the following action:
RUN – run as quickly as possible away from the shooter. If you don’t see the shooter run away from the sound of the shots.
HIDE – find a hiding place and keep quiet. If possible, lock or barricade yourself inside an office or closet. Close the blinds, turn off the lights, and silence your phones. If you are with a group, insist that everyone remain quiet. Do not open the door under any circumstances until you have received instructions from a credible source that it is safe to do so.
FIGHT – your best course of action for survival may be to fight the attacker. Look for items around you that could be used as weapons. If you are with a group, you may be able to overcome the attacker.
When security or police officers arrive on the scene their first priority will be to subdue the attacker. Don’t be surprised if they move past you or don’t respond to your calls for help. Do follow their instructions quickly and do your best to encourage your participants and clients to do the same.
These classes and programs are typically held outside the main sport facilities. If you instruct one of these classes please:
carry a mobile phone or know of the nearest working telephone
keep a list of emergency contacts
carry accident report and waiver forms
be aware of your surroundings always
carry or know of the nearest first aid kit
FitLife currently has 2 electric carts primarily used by Move Right, FitLife Mobile, and occasionally by the FitLife Assistants. You must take a driver safety course via UC Learning and register as a Recreation driver prior to using the cart. Check with your supervisor.
The electric cart is a motor vehicle designed to:
Carry no more than two persons, including the driver
Operate at a maximum speed of 25 mph
If there are pedestrians around you on campus, you may only drive one mile faster than their walking speed. Follow all road laws and keep your driver’s license in your possession while driving.
Keep these emergency numbers with you while driving:
Campus Police (858) 534-4357 to report an accident
Fleet services (858) 534-3485 for towing
Campus Risk Management (858) 246-0369 for insurance/claims
The carts are kept along Ridgewalk: one at the TEC cafe and one farther North, near the soccer fields. For access, speak to your supervisor on procedures. Charging cords must be kept with the cart at all times (if you take the cart, take the cord). If battery is below half at the start of your shift, notify your supervisor right away. The boxes with PVC pipes should be kept inside the cart (to keep them from getting wet) unless in use/extra space is needed inside (put them back inside when done using the cart). Please remember to always plug carts in, fully zip doors shut, and return keys to the Tracka box at the end of usage. Full details can be found here: Golf Cart Usage Reminders.
Please refer to the Behind the Wheel Checklist, and Driver Responsibilities for additional information.
