President's Dissertation-Year Fellowship

Presidential DYF fellowships are based on both academic merit and diversity criteria: the academic achievement of the nominee, the potential for success in academia, and the extent the nominee contributes to the diversity among doctoral degree recipients in the division.

To qualify, nominees must be a US citizen, permanent resident, or undocumented student who qualifies for nonresident supplemental tuition exemptions under AB 540, and must be in a position to complete the dissertation by the end of the next academic year. Non-resident tuition for international students more than 9 quarters after candidacy will not be covered by the fellowship and must be paid out of other sources.

Perlino Award

The 2023 call can be viewed here

This fund was set up from a private donation from the Perlino family to support research focusing on "issues related to deafness or developing new techniques and tools to support members of the deaf community." This award funds summer GSR research.

Federico and Rena Perlino Award:

Federico Perlino died in 1981, and Rena Perlino died on October 20, 2003. Together, they had owned and operated Perlino's Poultry Market on Front Street in Santa Cruz, the current site of the Santa Cruz Community Bank, from 1930 to 1960. The Perlinos bequeathed their estate to be used to benefit the local community, and the UC Santa Cruz Psychology Department is one of several local beneficiaries.

UC President's Pre-Professoriate Fellowship (PPPF)

Full details are available here.  Applications for this Fellowship are typically due in Winter quarter.

The fellowship supports PhD students (two per campus each year) who are California Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) alumni and have advanced to candidacy at UC. The fellowship aims to foster their interest and preparation for the professoriate.

The program’s goal is to enhance faculty pathways for historically underrepresented groups, particularly Chicanx/Latinx, African Americans, American Indians/Native Americans, Filipinx, and Pacific Islanders in all disciplines; women in STEM; and Asian Americans in the humanities and social sciences. The intent of the program is to provide fellowships for domestic historically underrepresented minorities from federally-designated California HSIs. For purposes of this fellowship, AB540 students are eligible. International students are not eligible for this fellowship.

This UC PPPF is only available to UC doctoral students who are matriculated in academic PhD programs and have advanced to candidacy. Professional students (e.g. M.D., J.D.) are not eligible.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. GRFP seeks to broaden participation in science and engineering of underrepresented groups, including women, minorities, persons with disabilities, and veterans. The five-year fellowship provides three years of financial support inclusive of an annual stipend of $37,000.

Guru Gobind Singh Fellowship

Faculty from across the University of California system nominate candidates for this competitive fellowship. To be eligible, a student must (1) be a graduate of an Indian or Pakistani university in the designated area, (2) be committed to returning to her or his country of origin after receiving the degree, and (3) not have engaged previously in graduate study at any other institution of higher learning in the United States. Individuals already holding a master’s degree will have preference. Students at any stage of graduate study may be nominated, provided that the nominating campus will commit to providing a Nonresident Tuition Fellowship, if applicable, for the Singh Fellow, as needed, for the duration of the Fellow’s program (assuming continued satisfactory academic progress) commencing with the year following the Singh award year.
