Class Pass

WHY IT WORKS

Class Pass allows students to appropriately escape tasks or situations for a predetermined length of time in a predetermined location. Students also have the option to exchange unused passes for rewards which should be more rewarding than the break that the class pass would provide. This is an effective intervention because it provides students with the choice to request a break which increases tolerance for non preferred tasks. It also provides students with the opportunity to earn a reward for staying on task during difficult, boring or frustrating tasks which increases motivation.

APPROPRIATE STUDENTS

The class pass is appropriate for students who engage in negative behaviors to escape or avoid tasks.

STEPS TO IMPLEMENTATION

  1. Negotiate a location and time limit for the student to take their break.

  2. Predetermine rewards or privileges for saved passes.

  3. Provide the student with a limited number of passes.

  4. Teach the student how to appropriately request a break with the pass. Don’t assume all students have this skill.

  5. If you see early warning signs to problem behaviors, discreetly prompt the student to use one of their passes. As the student uses passes or chooses to redeem them for other rewards, be sure to collect data and analyze the effectiveness of the intervention while providing feedback to the student.
