Multimodal Comunication and Human Development
Research Team
About us
We are a research team made up of a group of researchers from different Spanish universities: UAM, UCM, UNED, UCLM and UDIMA.Â
We are specialized in psychology, speech therapy and pedagogy.
What do we investigate?
Our studies focus on the context of interaction between children and their caregivers (parents and educators). Specifically, throughout a key stage in children's development: early childhood education.
All of our research aims to identify and describe interactive and multimodal indicators (which combine speech, gestures, gazes, movements) of language development in the first cycle of early childhood education, both in its communicative and self-regulatory functions.
All this with the purpose of generating applicable guidelines in educational contexts and early care. As well as, provide new and effective intervention models with a family-centered approach.
Changes in multimodal coordination at transition points in language development in stage 0-3
Objectives:
To describe the emergence of the first gestures: from rhythmic movements (reflex and voluntary acts of the child) to the first multimodal behaviours.
To know beyond the first words. In particular, the role of representational gestures and their synchrony with the verbal component (speech and signs) in the development of vocabulary and grammar.
To understand the role of touch in synchrony with gestural and verbal elements such as words.
The transition from social use to self-regulatory use of multimodal communicative elements: the case of motor behavior and primary emotions Â
Objectives:
To recognise the process of emergence of multimodal communicative elements and their role in the self-regulation of motor activity.
To identify the development of the manifestation of children's first emotional expressions and the role of these in the self-regulation of their primary emotions (joy, sadness, anger, fear).Â
Multimodal imitation in the development of communicative and linguistic skills
Objectives:
To analyse the different types of verbal imitation/repetition from a multimodal point of view, taking into account subsequent grammatical and vocabulary development.
To study the trajectories of children's and adults' verbal and multimodal imitations in different periods of early development. As well as knowing its relationship with the development of lexicon and grammar.Â
Development of easy-to-apply procedures for the detection of atypical development trajectoriesÂ
Objectives:
To adapt a sentence repetition task to assess language development in the final stage of the first cycle of childhood.
To adjust the fast-mapping task as an assessment and screening tool in early childhood education.
To design this fast-mapping task in app format.
