In unit 1, we are discussing causes, symptoms, and treatment of common foodborne illnesses. We are learning about the four key steps to food safety. Students will understand why following good safety practices can help you prevent kitchen accidents and how to apply basic first aid measures.

Child Development

Child Development will explore the intellectual, social, emotional, and biological development of children. It includes instruction in parent-child relations, parenting practices, special needs of children, parental and environmental influences on child development, external support services, and related public policy issues. This class is a basic foundation course for any student wanting to pursue a career in education or working with children in any capacity.

Family Living &Parenthood

In unit 1, the students will be introduced to personality, self-concept and self-esteem. We will discuss how to boost your self-esteem by focusing on your strengths and using those strengths to help others. Students will realize they have the potential to become whatever they want and the process of personal growth helps reach their potential.

Foundations of Restaurant Management 1

In Unit 1, the students will be introduced to the basic expectations that restaurant and foodservice operations have of their employees. Topics ranging from image to punctuality to attitude are discussed. The chapter also includes a thorough treatment on building relationships at work.

Foundations of Restaurant Management 2

Unit 1, introduces students to basic marketing concepts and explains how to create a marketing plan. The unit also discusses market segmentation, promotions, and public relations. We will looks at different types of menus. After describing the various types of menus, the unit discusses how to build and analyze a menu as part of the greater marketing scheme.

Engineering

UCHS offers Engineering courses through Project Lead the Way (PLTW). Currently, students may choose from Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, and Engineering Design and Development. All students enrolled in Engineering courses are members of the NAF Academy of Engineering and Computer Science. We partner with NAF so that our students who successfully complete at least two engineering courses and a paid internship following their junior or senior year can become NAF Track Certified.

Intro to Sewing & Design

This semester-long class will provide an introduction to fashion styling, beginning sewing techniques and fashion basics. We will learn safe use of hand sewing and design basics. Students will be able to identify and use a variety of fashion and styling practices, learn accurate measuring techniques, and follow directions properly in order to achieve desired results. Currently, in Unit 1, we are discussing the impact that fashion has on culture, and elements of influence on fashion in society.

Computer Science

It is important for everyone to learn how to use computers. Anyone can learn how to write computer code. Computer science offerings at UCHS include Computer Science Discoveries, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A. Computer science courses are taught using code.org and edhesive (amazon future engineer) curriculum. All students enrolled in Computer Science courses are members of the NAF Academy of Engineering and Computer Science. We partner with NAF so that our students who successfully complete at least two engineering courses and a paid internship following their junior or senior year can become NAF Track Certified.

NAF Academies

For the 2020-2021 school year, UCHS offers NAF academies in Health Sciences and Engineering. Students who successfully complete at least two courses within a NAF academy and a paid internship with NAF partner companies following their junior year can become NAF Track Certified, which gives them preferential hiring at NAF partner companies.
