What to do when you are reading in order to leave high quality comments.
 Question - Ask yourself what is happening, why did the author make this choice, why does the writing exist, who is it written for? What confuses you and why? How does this writing affect the world?
Connect - Connect to the writing personally. Connect the writing to other similar writings. Connect the writing to the world.
Predict - Attempt to predict what will happen next. These predictions should be based on what is in the text and your previous experience with other texts and your life.
Clarify - Stop and attempt to find answer to questions that you have.
Evaluate - Make judgements about what is happening in the writing including but not limited to, theme, plot, characters, dialogue, imagery, style, and diction.
Visualize - Draw pictures in your mind. Sometimes you can use pictures that you have seen elsewhere. Maybe you can think of a painting you have seen or an actor to play the character.
Summarize - Pull out the main ideas and be able to state them in your own words.
Reformat - Turn the text into an outline, chart, painting, song, story, etc.
Infer - Conclude, suggest, assume, based on the text. Form opinions about what is in the text.
Analyze - Main characters, conflicts, setting. Break them down into their component parts and look at how the interact with the author's main idea.
