Dramatic Scene (10% EC for this choice)
As a small group, choose a modern social conflict. Then write and perform a dramatic scene set in a different historical time period that makes a statement about the conflict. Your performance should demonstrate your understanding of Arthur Miller's purpose for writing The Crucible and how the play's historical setting supports his purpose.
Persuasive Speech
Your assignment is to write and present an original, persuasive two- to three-minute speech that addresses a contemporary issue. It should include a clear claim, support, counterclaim, and conclusion/call to action. Incorporate rhetorical appeals and devices to strengthen your argument and to help you achieve your desired purpose.
How can you relate your social issue to a personal conflict in a way that is engaging and relevant to the audience?
What historical settings could best convey your group's statement on the social conflict, just as Miller did? How can you find out more information about your scene's historical context?
What roles will each group member play in the performance? How will the number of people in your group affect the characters and plot of your scene?
What is the fairest way to share the responsibilities of the assessment between group members? How can you use a program such as Google Docs to promote collaborative work on the script drafts?
Out of the various positions that one might take on this issue, which one seems the most promising for a persuasive speech?
How have you made careful consideration of your purpose and audience in the planning of your speech?
How has your planning allowed you to incorporate the elements of effective physical and vocal delivery?
How will you use set design, stage directions, and dialogue to help your audience understand the scene's historical setting?
How will you engage the audience at the beginning of your scene? How can you order the events in your scene so your group's statement is clear to the audience? How do your characters and setting reveal your group's statement?
What role will dialogue, stage directions, and set design play in helping your audience understand the characters, conflict, and plot?
How will you format your text to include dialogue and stage directions? Actually this one is answered for you. I made a template that you can access through canvas.
