February 2019 Update

Message sent by Susan on 2/8/19

Hello Mentor Teachers,

Thank you for your work with our student teachers. January was a time for the student teacher to learn the routines of your classroom and school and start taking responsibility for some planning and teaching.

At this point, the student teacher can be taking responsibility (lesson planning and teaching) for about 10-15 % of each school day, while continuing to co-teach with you the remainder of the day (assisting, supporting, working with a small group, daily routines – using your plans). This progression chart shows a sample timeline.

February is a busy month for our students, but fortunately, they completed one of their evening classes, Art Methods.

Here are a few assignments they are working on:

- Math methods: the candidates are teaching math lessons using different lesson designs. Please let your student teacher have multiple opportunities to teach math to small groups and whole class.

- Research: Your student teacher is starting to identify a dilemma with their instruction, for a research study they will conduct during spring quarter (April – June). They will talk to you about this in greater detail later in the quarter.

- Seminar: Your student teacher will ask to sit with you to review modules this month. You already reviewed the edTPA module with them. I have asked the student teachers to review 2 more with you. It is not necessary to watch every video to the end (if a video is included). The modules are meant to open lines of communication about these student teaching expectations.

o Choose one: Building a relationship with your student teacher OR Classroom management support

o Choose one: Co-teaching OR Providing in the Moment Feedback

- edTPA: By now, the student teacher should have spoken to you about this assignment and asked for your support in selecting a math topic and a time to teach these math lessons. We recommend that video recording occur in mid-late February so the analysis can take place in March.

This was a long message- sorry about that! If you have any questions or need additional information, please let me or the UCI supervisor know.

Happy Lunar New Year!

Susan
